Trump wanted thousands of troops to surround the White House on Jan 6th to protect it from his supporters? And Pelosi stopped it? He was commander in chief at the time.

And isn't the interviewer one of his lawyers?

It's a regular MAGA lie that Trump offered and/or ordered extra security on January 6th but Pelosi refused it. Chris Miller, Trump's former Acting Defense Secreatary, and General Keith Kellogg, former White House Security Advisor, both testified to the January 6th committee that Trump made no such offer or order.

Yes that is one of his lawyers doing the interview. She is clearly in this for the publicity and is on the well trodden path of getting involved with Trump to then make a living on the media circuit as a guest or even have her own show.

Its classic Trump - repeat the lie over and over and many get sucked in. The facts are all about to get laid out in the Jan 6th committee report and they will be based on his own teams testimony so there will be no doubt this is a lie. But it wont stop him constantly misrepresenting the facts. Its how he operates, the base love it and many 'normal conservatives' will take it in.

However, Trump is really struggling to stay relevant and get his version of reality out there. Republicans are very openly critical of him right now. He's very much on the back foot and its a wall of negativity out there for him. He is responsible for some very low calibre people winning primaries and losing elections. And the ones that get through turn out to be a shit show. The election of speaker is currently facing a rebellion of Trumpers and it looks grim for McCarthy.

If they don't support McCarthy, wouldn't the Democrats be likely to win the vote for their candidate?

My understanding is the Speaker has to have 50% or more votes. They have to agree one or they cant officially function so if there is no agreement (or +50) after a first vote they go into multiple ballots until a candidate gets over the line. No other business can progress. It can go on for months like this.

Congress due to start on the 3rd Jan and they would have first vote on speaker that day. But they have a looming spending bill fairly soon so they have to have a speaker to avoid a shut down.

Its highly unlikely that the Republicans will end up seeking support of Dems to get a speaker elected. The Dems are not going to help McCarthy. Its hard to see how anyone else could come forward and overtake him, even with some Dem support you need 200+ GOP votes. Could a handful of GOP help a dem candidate, very unlikely, they would effectively become independents. A third possibility is a non elected speaker, a random could come forward and take whatever votes - again highly unlikely as no candidate.

The likely outcome is a GOP shit show and a much damaged McCarthy getting the job. The question is how much damage to Gatez and co want to cause?

The smart move is to find a candidate 5 republicans can accept and then the dems vote them in.

Kinzinger, Maria Salazar, John Katko.

Republicans who are not on the Trump/QAnon bandwagon.

Doesn’t seem like they’re going to do that though.

Everything could come in to play if the GOP can not get their votes in order.

Dems would have to tread carefully on any deal. Not sure there is anyone who would take on the job and who the Dems would help. Letting a shit show play out is possibly there best play.

A government shut down always plays badly for whoever is the driver and this would be clear as day a GOP shut down.
