US Politics Thread

Let me explain this to you guys from the other side.

They don't care. January 6th is only important to MSNBC types.

Side note: I don't care what SWP has to say either
You are right. Trumps hard core support doesn't care. What an indictment on them. Lots of respect for the many republicans that have come out publicly to say that while their political opinions don't align, voting against Trump is the only option they have.

I'm sure there are other candidates they could vote for - even if it's just as a one off protest. They are just hedging their bets so whatever the outcome they can claim to be on the 'right' side and keep their power/jobs.

The 2024 Presidential election outcome is a toss-up, with a slight advantage for Harris, but within the margin of error.

The biggest wildcard in the race, as of now, is the war in Israel (certainly, other major, but unexpected events with determative impact could occur within the next 30 days).

And yet, three things are certain:
1) Harris will win the popular vote;
2) The electoral college system is fucking stupid;
3) If Trump loses the election, he'll claim it's due to voter fraud - and will do whatever he can, legal or otherwise, to overturn election results so long as he comes out winner.

Interesting (in the proverb sense) times lie ahead.

I’m not sure any country where the candidate with the most votes doesn’t get elected can describe itself as a properly functioning democracy.

Indeed, but we are throwing stones in a glasshouse ourselves to some extent as the UK system of first past the post does not really reflect the popular vote either.

I don’t think anyone could accuse me of not repeatedly pointing out that our own electoral system is completely wank.

It's a good summation.

I'd add that polls are as you described but other indicators point heavily toward a Harris win. Small dollar fundraising a good example.

But Trump is so unconventional its hard to way that up. Are Trump voters not donating as they spent all their money on trinkets?

Voter registration data also points at a significant Harris lead.

If you want Trump defeated you'll vote for Harris. No other option is as good.

These Republicans not only want Trump defeated but they want the whole Trump ethos out of their party. When that happens they will return I'm sure.
