US Politics Thread

No, you’d hope it doesn’t come down to that, but to be fair to MSC, I don’t believe he’s trying to make out that all Americans are stupid. At least that’s not what I got from it.
I think he’s showing concern that the campaigning is more about celebrity endorsement. I looked at the SNL clip from Harris the other night and thought to myself, is this what politics has become. Not only in America, but you certainly seem to be leading the way.

I know I write, half in jest in here, chiefly because I can’t believe, either the sincerity of some posters in what they defend, or what they profess to believe.
But really, I suppose we’ll find out soon enough, whether this propaganda, fake news media, celebrity endorsement, sloganised non detail specific agenda works or not.
It certainly seems to be something one side relies on wholely, but the other seems to be dabbling in, if you can’t beat them join them.

You know where my allegiances lie in this one, but truly the whole campaign has been a story state of affairs if this is the new normal.
Yeah, but it ISN'T all about celebrity endorsements, and never has been, and never will be. And he knows that, and so do you, because it's common sense, and we aren't devoid of it.

Celebrities have every right to use the soapbox they have to talk about what they want, just as we use this teeny tiny soapbox to talk about what we want.

Do I rank order the point of view of a movie actor vs an automobile-manufacturer CEO vs an academic expert on Southern poverty vs the Secretary of Defense? Of course.

Would Tom Hanks' view be the be-all and end-all for someone? Yeah, maybe for Tom Hanks. I doubt for anyone else.

Most celebrities are building AWARENESS, not prescribing/demanding that all follow in their footsteps.

You'd think we'd all be grateful that they care enough to have a view (especially when for the richest and most famous the outcome means relatively little to how rich and famous they are) and to remind folks to use their own voices.

@KS55 are you sure that's right. Biden didn't win NC and he got over 300 college votes.

No! I’m guessing at EC, but educated guess at state results. I could do a tot up and edit tomorrow if I have time. Don’t put any money on my predictions.

Here, you can play with scenarios to your heart’s content:

I don’t have a vote in any of this so ultimately it shouldn’t mean a damn to me, but I have to say, I too get a sense of, ‘ good for you’, or ‘tell it like it is’, when the likes of De Niro or someone I admire the integrity of, come out and lambasts Tramp and let’s the world know, ‘ this is not who we are’.

Celebrity does influence, I’m sure. What weight an endorsement like that carries is probably minimal, as generally speaking that kind of celebrity message is preaching to the converted. The sensible public that also see the reality of who Tramp is. That’s not the audience that needs convincing.

Similarly, who Tramp is preaching prejudice to, are most likely just lapping up what they already believe.

The normalising of this campaigning in the media ( what passes for news channels), is the most alarming aspect for me.
It just seems crazy and out of control.
Having said that Foggy, I fully admit that I don’t watch much American News channels. Or American TV anymore, for that matter. I haven’t the stomach for it.

The "normaliz(s)ation" of Trump is straight out of the authoritarian playbook:

Lie so often and do such awful things all the time that everyone forgets about the lie and the awful thing you did an hour ago.

Lest we forget -- Trump was convicted of sexual assault. Trump privately, repeatedly lambasted soldiers and Gold Star families. Trump is Jeffrey Epstein's best friend. Injecting bleach might cure COVID. Those are just four things that randomly popped into my head -- all of which are disqualifying.

What are we focused on today?

Trump polesmoking a microphone.

You CAN'T keep up -- it's literally nor physically possible.

You mentioned DeNiro. Per the amazing Lorraine Bracco as Karen Hill in the wonderful "Goodfellas" rationaliz(s)ing the mob and its criminal sociopathy:

After awhile, it got to be all normal. None of it seemed like crime. It was more like Henry was enterprising, and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while all the other guys were sitting on their asses, waiting for handouts. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons, they were blue-collar guys. The only way they could make extra money, real extra money, was to go out and cut a few corners.
