Fellow Blues - In the process of looking to book my 2010 summer holiday and looking to go to the West Coast of USA! I am just after any advice of where to go, where not to bother and so on!

Im off with my misses and another couple so areas to have a good booze etc are also appreciated. We are currently looking at the usual; LA, San Francisco, Vegas etc but thought i would ask the biggest voice on the net!

Cheers in advance

Hi mate you can do a nice little square that invloves flying into any of the avove airports, hiring a car and stopping at the following.

Vegas
San Diego
LA
San Francisco

Vegas- for me not more than 3 nights, great place but not much to 'see' as such, just soak up the crazyness.

San Diegio-Not a city with loads to do, but just a really nice city on the coast, great beaches nearby like La Jolla and the Gaslamp Quater at night has loads of great bars and authentic mexican food.

LA- Places to visit- I like to stay in Santa Monica as it's a lovely little town next to venice beach with great shops and places to eat. Also go to Asia De Cuba on sunset strip it's quite expensive but the views and food made it the best resturant I have ever been to

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.mondrianhotel.com/default.aspx#/explore/?id=asiadecuba" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.mondrianhotel.com/default.as ... asiadecuba</a>

San Francisco- You can drive up the freeway (101?) from LA in (I think!) about 5 hrs but it's much nicer to take the coast road (highway 1?) and take in Carmel, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Berkely college etc and take about 3 days. We just stayed in cheap motels at all these small sufer places for about $40 per night-but all well worth a visit.

San Francisco is a great city but the temperature in Northern Cali is much cooler so take a sweater. Just outside the main city is a place called Mission-it's got loads of cool bars and where the locals go out at night- I found this gem which is brilliant for an early evening drink whilst watching the sun set over the city.

Cheers mate - very much appreciated. As I said, its in the early stages but always better to hear from someone who has been and not just someone trying to sell it to me!

bb2 is right, only spend three nights in vegas

from there we had a couple of nights in the grand canyon and walked from the top to the bottom and back up again in a day
if you do that head for indian gardens

spent a week in LA but at Hungtinton beach as its cheaper than Santa Monica, although we visited there and Venice beach
go to warner brothers studios, not universal if you want to see a working studio and six flags magic mountain if you like fantastic rollercoasters, better rides than disney but more down market, X is awesome
we also drove up Pacific Highway 1 from LA to san francisco and stopped at the hearst mansion on the way stopping in a small village on the way and had some superb clam chowder
went to carmel and pebble beach golf course
book a visit to Alcatraz on the net before you go as there's a 14 day waiting list when you get there

we booked the whole holiday through a combination of expedia and internet searches

Lonely Planet does a good book on the west coast and individual city guides

topped it off with a visit to yosemite park

Went last year with missus.

Can't go wrong with starting in San Francisco and travelling down PCH (Pacific Highway 1) and working your way down the coast.
We stopped in Monterrey Bay, calling in at Carmel, Pebble Beach, Malibu, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara.
Made our way to LA, drove around Beverly Hills (now thats a wealthy place!)
Stopped in a place called Costa Mesa not far from Laguna Beach and eventually ended up in Vegas. As BB2 said don't spend too long in Vegas not worth it in my opinion. You'll be blown away by the hotels and casino's but not much else.

Lonely Planet do a good book giving you the do's and don'ts of California.

In terms of weather we wnet end of March and yes it was cool but I wore shorts every day. In the mid 60's so summer should be hot!

Watch out for the fog in San Francisco Bay!!

Enjoy!!!!!!

Cheers guys,

Possible option of just getting an RV and seeing where the wind takes us! Although im cautious of where you are allowed to park them etc!

Cheers again

six flags theme park ,joshua tree park reserve, grand canyon, las vegas....you could even try seattle. lonely planet is a good sourse use that for proper guidence for a great family trip. its amazing.....Enjoy!!!

Just a correction from bb2.0's post who I highly doubt has actually been to SF. Mission is in the city proper, it's a district. Tons to do in SF if you're in to lots of touristy things.
