There are plenty of players in our team who have their names pronounced incorrectly every week on MOTD.
De Jong (Dee youngg) and David Silva (Dabveed Seelbva) immediately spring to mind.

I agree with you to a certain degree, I probably hate it as much as you do when I hear them using an affected accent, but it's the pronounciation that matters, not the accent. It's got nothing to do with the accent you have has it, my voice is Manc, always has been always will be, but Van-son is different to Vin-sent even in my stretched-out-vowel, nasaly tones isn't it.
If a bloke called John played in Spain do you really think they'd call him "Hh-on" on national TV ? They'd attempt to say John, wouldn't they? Not try to sound like a scouser/manc/cockney/brummie ....etc. ?

Just an observation, but it seems a lot of people on this thread haven't quite clocked the difference between an accent and a pronunciation.
Example: Saying José (the Spanish version).
If you pronounce it Joe-say - This is wrong.
If you pronounce it Hoe-zay - This is correct (or at least much better).
Now notice how you can say a sentence with the name José pronounced correctly without suddenly becoming Spanish half-way through. This is NOT putting on an accent, it is pronouncing the name correctly.
If you were to completely change your tone of voice/habits of dialect to accommodate the word then THAT would be putting on an accent.
There is no need for the latter but every need for the former. A name pronounced incorrectly is quite simply the wrong name.

How about Dirk Kuyt. We had about 20 different versions of that over the years. And who is that commentator who puts on a mad accent and manages to pronounce the names not only uniquely, but also incorrectly: you know the one who says TevEZ and KolAArov. Might be on the MCFC site.
