So with Sergio Aguero (can't do the dots on the U with this comp) the G in Sergio is pronnounced Serhio, but Aguero is pronounced Aguero as the umlaut on the U means that the G is pronounced G. That CityTV commentator who says Ahwero gets on my tits as he thinks he's being clever, but isn't. He also tries to say Balotelli in an Italian accent too which is equally as annoying. If he was consistent with all the native pronunciations then fair enough but he sounds like a cock when it's just one or two, and they're wrong anyway!

What about Guyal Clichy? Or is it Gail Clichy?

I'm sure I read somewhere that Sergio's name is pronounced something like "Serhio Ahuero" by Argentines. Hence unlike Spaniards who would adhere to the "G followed by U umlaut" rule. Carlito's surname is also pronounced differently by Spaniards and Argentines.

My favourite is still Ron Atkinson's attempts at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Just an observation, but it seems a lot of people on this thread haven't quite clocked the difference between an accent and a pronunciation.

Example: Saying José (the Spanish version).

If you pronounce it Joe-say - This is wrong.
If you pronounce it Hoe-zay - This is correct (or at least much better).

Now notice how you can say a sentence with the name José pronounced correctly without suddenly becoming Spanish half-way through. This is NOT putting on an accent, it is pronouncing the name correctly.

If you were to completely change your tone of voice/habits of dialect to accommodate the word then THAT would be putting on an accent.

There is no need for the latter but every need for the former. A name pronounced incorrectly is quite simply the wrong name.

I'm no expert on local dialects but for a professional commentator just five minutes of research on the internet isn't too much to ask. It is their job after all. The one that annoys me the most is Jamie Redknapp and his pronunciation of "Bosingwa". It just couldn't be more wrong!

The commentator does sound stupid when he puts on the accents for players names but to be fair, Aguero in the City magazine says his name should be pronounced with a 'h' sound
