Having watched the replay of the 'offside' goal from last night a few times now, the only thing I can think of is that she thought one passage of play was ending and an immediate goalscoring opportunity was not there.
Evidently she was wrong on both counts, her flag should stay down under the rules until the ball is in the net, out of play, turned over or momentum lost. But with VAR on the prowl, all we can say is it's an error as she must have known it would be picked up. If we lose the ball, West Brom break and have a goal scoring chance, who wants the game pulling back for a possible offisde then?
I think most of us still had doubts over the VAR review, as the lines they have drawn this season and last have been extremeley inconsistent - armpits, toes, different thicknesses etc.. it just created mistrust although they say they are tweaking rules for the better. And nobody likes the wait.
By flagging early she denies herself the best opportunity to see the rest of the play as she is now rooted to the spot, perhaps forgetting that she can and indeed should instead raise her flag at the end of that play, whatever the outcome.
I would say, whilst absolutely correct to play on, the referee almost freezes as much as the west brom defence and he really should have held up both arms to signal play on. Beecause he does not, we are percieved to have gained an advantage over west brom because they were looking at the officials rather than playing to the whistle. Or playing to the rules, as it is otherwise known.
I think the only thing they can accuse us of benefitting from this time is west brom not playing to the whistle. So, unless they change the rules to stop play if one side loses concentration, gets distracted or fancies a chat to a mate, then Carry on City :)
