Var debate 2019/20

It may seem like sour grapes but I'm struggling with the whole VAR thing.

In the Schalke game, the VAR monitor wasn't available to the on pitch referee.

He had awarded a corner only to be
verbally instructed through his earpiece, to change his decision to a penalty due to the VAR ref's opinion that Otamendi had handballed and should also be booked.

UEFA confirmed that although there was no facility for the on pitch ref to check on a monitor, he was told to change his mind, 'to ensure the correct decision was reached '.

UEFA want the correct decision, fair enough, we all want that.

So it's down to the TV cameras.

Do VAR use their own or the TV companies camera's?

Surely there is only one crew of cameramen working a game. Maybe someone can confirm this?

Do the TV companies, if it's their camera equipment, decide what to show UEFA?

If so, Can UEFA come out and make a statement to explain why that referee wasn't shown every TV angle available?

I'm presuming Llorente's goal was reviewed due to the VAR guy spotting a handball, that we've now all seen, with the ball striking Llorente's arm, before going into the net.

So, why wasn't that ref verbally instructed to award the correct decision like at Schalke.
Or worse, Why wasn't he shown the angle everyone else saw?

Maybe I'm just very disappointed, but it doesn't sit right with me.

Finest margins. Shame really, clearly off the elbow on one particular angle which I believe they had but the Turk seemed to fixated on the other two angles where it was not visible. I thought similar about the VAR review on the Juventus claims of Blind handling the ball late in their match - no different than the one that saw United go through over PSG yet VAR says it wasn't. Definitely VAR helps make the game more just but equally there are aspects to improve
In cricket, when they use video evidence, you can hear the officials and if they are undecided they often ask "are there any other angles?". They're under less time pressure in cricket, though. Hopefully they'll learn from this and that question is asked in future, but as I think it's obvious that the conclusive angle was withheld, I'm not holding my breath. The VAR team need to be visible too and heard if it is to command the fans' respect. I thought the ref was pretty good last night, but now we have to consider the bias of the VAR team. Are they chosen with as much care as the on-field officials?

AS’s resident referee Iturralde González commented: ”It hits his hand first then his hip and the UEFA instructions are clear: you can't score if it hits your hand, even if it’s involuntary. It doesn't matter if the elbow is tight to the body. If it happens to a defender it's not a penalty, but if it's an attacker it has to be disallowed. Rossetti has told the UEFA referees.”

He added: "Irrati (the VAR) - the number one VAR official - advises Çakir because he's seen a hand. When Çakir comes back from seeing the images he tells the players 'I didn't see anything. It hit his thigh.' They didn't play him the view from behind where you can see it hits the elbow. The error from the VAR is not showing the two key images. Why? The question is getting it right, not how long it takes."

AS’s resident ref's conclusion: "Manchester City are out because the VAR wasn't used properly".

Like a good majority have been saying all along. Fucking hate getting robbed. We got fucked over good and proper last night. Even thinking about only showing one angle to the ref makes my blood boil. Bastards cost us the quadruple.

Fucking coward, you’re avoiding the original question of why Llorente didn’t get his arm out of the way of a relatively slow moving ball from 20-25 yards away.
I take it you`ve never played the game otherwise you`d realise that its impossible to even think about your stupid claim in a micro second. It hit his hip but dont let Citys shit defending get in the way of excuses, thats what lost us the match.
I`ll glady meet and you can call me a coward to my face you key board warrior.

So from next season onwards it will hard to spontaneously cheer a goal. What's the fucking point anymore. My lad rang me up late last night and told me he's fucking his season card off for next season(he's 35 and been going since he was 5). Emotions running high I know but to me it feels like the game I know and love is fucked. I hate VAR with a passion and not just because of last night.

Well this seems pretty conclusive.

where did you get this statement from ?

They'll sweep all the bad VAR decisions under the carpet and just put them down to teething problems. VAR is going to stop fans celebrating goals instantly, instead they're going to wait for the decision to come through from a caravan ten miles away.

Shit defending or not, it hit his elbow first. You can’t score with an illegal part of the body, intentional or not.

Even the ref couldn't see it clearly with VAR that's why he shrugged.

But if he was told handball and to look at VAR then surely the decision is already made for him and no goal

That rule is not enforced until next season.
Think of Sergios goal at home to Arsenal (3rd goal) should that have been wiped off ? Another unintentional handball.
and it would have been if VAR had been present at that game.

The use of VAR in rugby is brilliant as they view every available single angle and TV viewers are able to hear what’s being said as well as all replays shown in the ground. If it can happen in rugby then why not in football given all the money in the game that isn’t in rugby. If it is going to be used then use it properly. The fact he was told to review it on the monitor surely suggests that someone had seen something not quite right.
But there is your point.... more money in football = more corupt!

But yes I do agree with you, they have it working fine.

I would rather it interrupted the flow of the game if the right call was made...

It’s shit but having watched the view from behind the goal it shows how poor we defended. Kompany doesn’t read the flight so misses the clearance header and Laporte was wrong side of loriente

I feel like that this morning, big part of me says I'm finished with this shite,to a degree var is needed, and it will ruin the game we know and love, but let's have it fair, especially for all the fans who pay their money to watch.

I'll be back up for it on Saturday lunchtime, but very unsure about it going forward, just pisses me right off,if we had won all 4 this season, there would be plenty thinking about the future, well if you are a certain age I mean.but let's have one last push to win the league and FA Cup,we can do this.

"And Aguero has just scored there to take the title from Manchester Utd in the last minute of added time. The fans are just waiting to see if it has gone to var. Yes. It has. And the goal is given. The fans here are applauding frantically. Some have even stood up. What an atmosphere"

I can fully understand it. Offsides are the worst part of it for me. I've always accepted that if a player scores but is marginally offside, it's just one of those things, you win some, you lose some. Now the attacker will have to be less adventurous and that will be to the detriment of the game. Mind you, Liverpool will end up mid-table next season as a result!
