VAR Discussion Thread - 2023/24 | PL clubs to vote on whether to scrap VAR (pg413)

Would you want VAR scrapped?

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
I wouldn't be surprised if there will be quite a lot of push back against this from other associations.

I'd be amazed if it happened here. Liverpool were roundly mocked, and I suspect, away from the heat of the moment, even their management would vote against the possibility of replays.

You have more faith in the management of the PL than I do.

VAR produces the same shite in the Bundesliga. I've just watched Dortmund v Bochum and the BVD CF jumps, the ball smacks him right on the forearm, trundles onto a team-mate who gets cleaned out. VAR has a shufty and awards the pen. How did we get the Laporte goal disallowed if a full ball smackin' a forearm is ignored?

Ask @BlueHammer85 . He’ll tell you the fans want VAR: “bigger attendances innit?”

Slight twist there to my point.
If VAR has ‘killed’ football like so many repeatedly claim then why aren’t fans boycotting? And instead attendances/viewers are increasing?

Admit VAR hasn’t killed the game - And then we can move on to discuss the pros and cons.

Not enough talk about the aspect of VAR that allows the linesman not to raise his flag and stop play, but allow play to continue. It's going to take a high-profile injury caused by this ruling before it's changed.

Likewise, with VAR - the immediate decisions are taken away from on-field referees. They will now allow the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phases of play to continue, whereas before *whistle, foul.

In my mind, that's not ensuring the safety of the players. Raul Jiminez, Petr Cech, Steven Davies, Ian Hume - life-threatening head injuries; or David Buust, Eduardo, Ramsey, etc. level injuries. will have to happen before authorities realize this is a risk.

Maybe it's a generational thing. FOCs like me were fine with football just the way it was, warts and all. Younger people like yourself see it as part of the entertainment, maybe?

The day trippers will continue to come and see what they regard as a spectacle. For us dyed-in-the-wool fans of many years we see that the game is being manipulated. What is disallowed one week is allowed the next. It is all well 'n good for Howie and Mikey to come with apology after apology when VAR clearly buggers up but the whole point of VAR is that it returns a decision that wholly reflects what has happened. I watched the cricket last night and every time there was a check my reaction was 'Well, that's that then, yer out!' I want football to follow the same methods that other sports use. I want to hear and see what, apparently, those jokers in the commentary box can see. Until that happens I will consider VAR as used in football as the perfect opportunity to fiddle a result! But I think I will have long since departed from live football as I cannot see the arbitrators ditching their 'smoke 'n mirrors' offering.

That is most certainly what you get without VAR.

VAR gives a chance to reduce those refereeing mistakes - it won’t and never will completely eliminate it.

It wasn’t all fine and dandy prior VAR, it was constant outrage about officiating, lots of rose tinted glasses that everyone will be happier if we scrap VAR - check the recent West Ham match v Bristol City when they should have had two clear red cards - our fans outrage and furious VAR isn’t in use.

Obviously it will always go round in circles this debate - I’ll always stick with keeping VAR because it always has room to improve and constantly evolve. It’s not great, it spoils the game at times, it gets things wrongs, it can be slow … I’ve highlighted the negatives of VAR over and over and over and happy to continue so.

Fans don’t boycott because there’s no alternative- it’s not like giving your local Asda a miss because they’ve ruined your shopping experience.

You keep citing increased attendances / viewers - that’s despite VAR.

Let the authorities put it to a vote. Every season ticket holder gets a simple yes / no vote. How do you think the majority would vote?

We’ve now gone from not being sure whether to celebrate to leaving the game and not being sure the result will stand (see recent Belgium game).
