Anyone see Paqueta's shoulder barge yesterday at Brighton? If that was the rags I suspect a pen would have been awarded. Or are these 'robust' challenges now subject to the whim of the referee
No, they're subject to ANY of the VAR room operators.

That Paqueta tackle.... Even if the ref didnt think it was a penalty, someone in the VAR room could EASILY have come up with a reason it was a penalty, because nowadays the rules are so loose. Any excuse can be used. And that leads to biases coming into play. Can be the ref or any number of the VAR room staff.

only way it is eradicated is if all discussions the var room and ref are available for public consumption, take yesterday at old trafford, both those decisions were ratified almost instantly which suggests that they werent looked at or discussed in detail which brings into question the point of var at all, you can look at a mm offside for 3-4 minutes, but you cant spend the same amount of time on a contentious pen or sending off?

Simon Hooper had an interesting return to the VAR room today. Let’s hope he gets another week off
As Robbie Earle said on the NBC review of our game, I am not sure what Cooper was looking at when VAR reviewed that Baldock rugby challenge on Haaland in the box.

Nailed on penalty “missed” by the VAR that was stood down for “missing” the foul by Onana in the box in the final minute of the Wolves match.

Mike Dean’s comments destroyed any credibility the system had. It has always been flawed as it still relied on a human decision, no different to an on field ref. Had more angles etc but it’s lack of any policing makes it the ultimate tool to control goals and therefore matches.

Tough game for the VAR lot this weekend......... do they favour Arsenal due to they may challenge or United to keep them in the hunt for a top 6 place
