VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

The Guardian disagree with you.
That said the point is surely that Var is now out of control. No one saw the so called touch. Its ruining the game
Further, no one in the stadium realised it was not a goal. The scoreboard showed 2-2. And then 3-2 after the Real penalty.
Yet again match going fans are left in the dark.
I've read the Huardian article posted by @johnnytapia and I agree with every word.

I don’t dispute any of that. And it’s not everyday that UEFA announce they will be asking FIFA to review a rule, within a couple of hours of an incident. So even they clearly don’t feel relaxed about what went on.

The only point that I was making was, no matter what the Guardian say, is that the VAR intervening on a double touch, same as the ‘keeper moving off the line, isn’t subject to a clear and obvious mistake. They judge it, rightly, or in this case possibly wrongly, as a factual intervention.

It’s progress guys. And the fans want it.
(Just be careful you don’t actually ask the match going fans, it might be a slightly different result).
The Guardian article absolutely kills it. Reflects everything the proper match going fans have been saying since it started: fuck off and let us get back to celebrating properly- we’ll take the rough with the smooth, not this death by millimetre fucking horseshit.

VAR is absolutely the way forward. Only it needs to be driven by AI. The same exact AI in charge.

Why?

Because:
1) With AI in charge, decisions will be instantaneous;
2) With AI in charge, decisions will be uniformly good or bad - and if bad, changes can be made.
3) Deciding matches based on random human input is bullshit.

Problem with football is those in charge don’t want to learn from other sports who have used video assistance for years. I was pro VAR at the start for clear and obvious mistakes where everyone can see on first replay the decision is wrong, what they have done is overkill and ruins the flow and goal celebrations. Why not just use a challenge system like cricket or NFL? Have a time limit for a review? As a match going fan it’s so frustrating being in the dark in the ground, even the semi automated offside seems to take a lot longer than I expected !!

Sounds good. In fact, go the whole hog and play the game with robots.

Possibly wrongly? it's was 100% double touched only shown with the var camera and the ball sensor. VAR got it spot on and applied the rules correctly

Just makes me angry that they get these decisions correct - why can’t they just let double touched penalties stand, offside goals stand, award no contact divers for penalties and allow players to bite opposition players like the good ol days.

Two out of those four things still happen and the other two are that rare that even bringing them up makes your childishly sarcastic post even less worth reading.

Still happen far far less and when it does their is outrage and scrutiny (which I agree with)
Before VAR farcical decisions were much more common.

Allow players to bite the opposition!!!! Ha ha ha yeah that was a weekly occurrence.
Keep clutching those straws - the tide is a turning.

Obviously that was said in jest but point still stands - before VAR you could easily get away with that sort of stuff.

Uh-huh, and lets start mandating steering wheel-less cars while we're at it, immediately, because we humans can't be relied on for anything anymore. smfh.

They should fuck VAR off. It’s killed the enjoyment of what we go to the game for: celebrating a goal.

Fans celebrate goals wildly still. Watch the cup final Sunday and when the ball hits the net fans will instantly celebrate as they always have done.

“before VAR you could easily get away with that sort of stuff”
You couldn’t. You had the very rare Battiston/ Schumacher type incident. Or Suarez., one game in a million. We’ve now got VAR micro managing every fucking decision and it’s killed the celebrations.

And I would go one step further. It's not "just" the celebrations, although that's the most glaring part of it. But it's the unease felt throughout the entire match knowing that VAR is always watching from above, ready to pounce on something whenever they feel like it. Football matches under VAR have taken on a very dystopian surveillance state feel, and a dysfunctional one at that that creates rude interruptions to the experience.

So of course "wild" celebrations would seem to still occur to some extent, but they're very different. The roar of a crowd when a goal is scored may be comparable to a pre-VAR roar of the crowd, but after a few moments you're always looking over your shoulder. You're always waiting to see when your joy will be interrupted by a lengthly review that destroys the whole moment. And I'm sorry, but I'm gonna bring this up again, then if the goal stands and you're given permission to continue your subdued celebration you then have to witness an improper backwards kickoff to re-start the match. This whole new way of doing things that has been brought on by VAR and the FIFA President is just flat out wrong. It all feels wrong in our bones!! We know what it's supposed to be like and look like. And what's been going on since VAR has been introduced is definitely not that!!

Makes me angry that VAR doesn’t get the decisions correct like the handball at Spurs, the not a double kick by Alavarez, the shirt pull and fouls on Young etc
You make out that VAR has improved the game because no decisions are wrong yet there are just as many as before the only difference now is there are a group getting it wrong even though some of them can look over and over again feeeze frame and slow motion
Then there is the ridiculous mm offside using flawed methods which enables the VAR to select the frame which suits him best
