VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

They should change the laws then. Nothing to do with VAR.
Then I think they'll have to change the rules to accommodate VAR or use VAR like they do in other sports.
VAR can spot the Alvarez double touch but isn't used when a player is incorrectly adjudged to have kicked the ball over the end line.
Glaringly obvious mistakes that can be seen on the TV screen.
I enjoyed the concept of VAR at the start but genuinely cheesed off of it now.
Can't say I know anyone that likes it.

Without VAR ask fans if they like the officials.
Before they made honest mistakes at one viewing in real time Now the mistakes are made by numerous people who have the benefit of video relays, slow motion and pause VAR has fucked football with the changes to the laws to accommodate it

I like the concept of var but its been used so badly with so many controversial mistakes and not mistakes that are in a grey area they have just been so plain and clear to see and the lack of explanations that make sense and then ex-referees jumping through hoops stumbling over themselves to try and make it make sense when it only makes it worse leads me to think we should fuck it off for good. And unfortunately I will never be convinced that in its past and current use its not manipulating moments in games. And another thing whilst we are on themes around manipulation the time keeping farce over the past few seasons has been nothing short of diabolical and embarassing. Fans pay a whole lot of their monthly income on following their clubs and the authorities simply give no fucks whatsoever. Sky/TNT game planning included.

You’ve no idea . I concur

Ask most fans if they think Refs are shit
Ask most fans if they think footballs ‘corrupt’
Ask most fans if they think their own team gets unfair treatment

Majority verdict doesn’t mean it’s right, VAR has greatly improved and will improve year on year.
As per the last poll - most fans wouldn’t scrap VAR they just want it improved.

VAR is absolutely the way forward. Only it needs to be driven by AI. The same exact AI in charge.

Why?

Because:
1) With AI in charge, decisions will be instantaneous;
2) With AI in charge, decisions will be uniformly good or bad - and if bad, changes can be made.
3) Deciding matches based on random human input is bullshit.
Fuck that right off.

I agree. And its why auto-offside works. People dont trust people.

What happened Saturday on Brighton disallowed goal?
VAR screen initially said investigating possible hand ball. Then afterwards said disallowed for
foul? How come ref not sent to screen to confirm that he was in agreement that foul had actually been committed as foul subjective decision.....

Since the date VAR came in, the game, as a product, has got worse. It has become more frustrating, infuriating, over-analysed, confused, pgmol'd to death (Ref's really were never this much of a topic before VAR). It has become more politicised, more contentious. Refs more regularly get death threats. We STILL get the most outrageous incorrect decisions. I think its actually brought the game into disrepute, it's become a funny meme used in adverts for shit stuff.

But for me, and I might be wrong, it feels like football getting more distant from true fans. Like its being taken away from us and monetised etc, and I think VAR is part of that. I mean what happened to keeping the game the same at all levels?

Anyway, given a choice, any football fan would rejoice at VAR being removed, it would be like liberation, like we had a say in our game. Then we would go back to moaning and complaining about refs. It is what we liked to do. But we would never go back to VAR.
