I'm genuinely perplexed by the calls in the Burnley Vs rags game. Lyle called offside and the image clearly shows just his lower arm is offside. But you can't score with your lower arm? I was genuinely under the impression that for that very reason they discarded the lower arm? Except at old trafford, it seems. Yet you just know that the same call, in different circumstances, will be given as a goal. Different people officiating, different team wanting the goal, different decision.
Then there is the last minute penalty. Who'd have guessed United would be the beneficiaries here? A foul, yes for sure, but it's outside the area and the United player then dives to ground landing inside the area.
And what's the point now of carding goalkeepers for hanging on to a ball for 8 seconds, when var wants 8 minutes to check something and does away completely with the "clear and obvious" bar.
There genuinely is a different use of var depending on the team involved and the situation. I think we have all clearly seen that this weekend. If that is Burnley up the other end in the last minute at old trafford, who honestly thinks var is getting involved to change the referee's mind? Unless he did actually give a penalty to Burnley, in which case I can totally see him being called to the screen and being told the foul is outside the area.
The anger amongst supporters, and now seen in more and more pundits, is not unjustified. Yet like many on here and elsewhere, I will repeat that it's not the technology or the idea itself. It's the mucky little hands of the humans behind it, and their inconsistency and plain unfairness in the application of var, which is driving us to despair. They've found a way to manipulate games not just despite var, but with it.
A terrible weekend for var, and it's not over yet. My team is playing later today and I'm actually not looking forward to it because of var. What on earth are we doing to our game?
