Var debate 2019/20

Imagine the day when an important goal is scored and both players and fans offer no reaction to it other than standing/sitting there in polite silence as we await the VAR outcome. The beautiful game.

I don’t feel any better even after sleeping on it. Outraged. They even cherry pick the camera angle that looks most like what they want the decision to be.

It’s Video Assisted Corruption.

Nothing wrong with the decision at the end but it'll kill goal celebrations, people just wont celebrate until it's confirmed, one of the reasons why I think they'll sack it off eventually and just use it for red cards and penalties.

How he missed it hitting Llorente's hand though I'll never know.

I was all for VAR after seeing how well goal line technology had worked. No hanging around immediate decision goal or no goal. After last night being the first time I’ve been to a game where decisions have been made there needs to be clarity for everyone to see or hear what’s going on or just simply bin it for good. The penalty against rose in the first game was a bit harsh and last nights hand ball goal is subject to interpretation deliberate or not? Still not seen the off side decision was in the south stand so no idea if that was or wasn’t

There was a angle here from the broadcaster in Australia Optus Sports that showed the deflection off Llorente's arm but it was never shown to the ref when he checked it, I'm not sure where Optus Sports get their feed from.

They had a segment on the post game show dedicated to that VAR review and all the panelists were baffled and said how amateurish it was that the ref wasn't shown that view, especially in a tournament of the magnitude of the Champions League.

It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth to lose like that, or have VAR and it not be used properly at such a big moment, with all the angles shown to the ref. Not the reason we lost the tie, but it makes you wonder.

It's significant that BT didn't show that angle in their post game analysis, when you've got to think the director had seen it. BT are biased as fuck, I think even Frank knows that!

Was it deliberate ??
Was it fuck and therefore the goal stands.Think of Sergio v Arsenal at home where it unitentionatly hits his arm.
Next season it will be dis allowed.
Look at Llorrente. Did he deliberately score with his arm/elbow/thigh ?
Did he fuck >
Another piss poor piece of defending !!!
I’m glad you brought that up, because on MOTD that same night they all agreed that it would be given as handball next season, with VAR in use.

And after that incident UEFA changed the rule for handball as being anytime the ball hit the hand/arm is handball, following the Ottomendi handball against Schalke.

The Spurs goal was a scandalous decison. The ball is defelcted into the net from his hand. It can never be a goal under any circumstances and the camera angle behind the goal shows it clearly. As Mark Halsey has said today if the ref had seen the correct angle he would have disallowed it. The Sterling goal is more subjective. It looked like Sergio was played on by Eriksen hitting the ball back and that's what all the players thought but it did hit Bernardo so there is a genuine case for it to be disallowed. Some you get some you don't. The media will never back us so we have to move on to Saturday and do the business then (with no VAR)

Unless VAR is implemented correctly and with match going fans given all the necessary information, i'm finished with football after 55 years of it. Still don't know what went on with the last minute goal. From where i was sat the referee looked to have no part in the decision to disallow it.
The Llorente hand ball (which i only saw because the bloke in front was watching the game on his BT sports app) looked like handball. I knew it would be disallowed after going to VAR, but now i'm being told that BT didn't show the ref the correct angle. Complete and utter bollocks. Will kill the game stone dead as others have said above.

I am not being bitter after last night. As a now armchair fan ( maybe 3 games a season ) var is ruining the game I love i can't stand to see anymore var decisions that are wrong var is only as good as the people reviewing it if they choose not to show certain angels I would rather put up with a few bent refs

If they want to introduce technology why not start with proper timekeeping 3 mins in 1st half was a fucking joke

This is the one thing that boils urine to point where the receptacle melts. It is bloody obvious what teams are doing, particularly goalkeepers. There are two possible solutions. First, an independent timekeeper where there are two identical halves of playing time (however long the knobs it FIFA may decide) or players clearly wasting time are sanctioned. If an outfield player repeatedly broke the laws of the game by a series of fouls he would be booked. A goalkeeper can continue to take time out by walking slowly to the opposite side of the goal area, three outfield players can have a conference as to who is taking the throwing! It's one of the biggest shambles in the game that the lawmakers seem more than happy to maintain. Has a goalkeeper ever been cautioned for timewasting within the first half? And how the time is arrived at for the criminal nonsense of 'added time' is just another way in which games and outcomes can and, I am convinced, are manipulated. I also understood that VAR in Euro comps was for the ref to go and look at a monitor on the pitch side. Cacky Canute ne'er moved from the middle of the pitch. It also seems that VAR operates on a 'limited' number of angles. Why is that?

It's significant that BT didn't show that angle in their post game analysis, when you've got to think the director had seen it. BT are biased as fuck, I think even Frank knows that!
I gather from that Optus Sports over here don't use the BT sports feed. We saw that replay angle live during the game, and it was dead set handball for me.

Something reaks about that whole thing the more I read about that whole thing.

Personally I don't mind a delay as long as we don't get cheated from an incorrect decision. Like what happened with Liverpool last year.

Last night I thought the correct call had been made for the handball, but it now looks like the ref just wasn't shown the view that would have disallowed the goal. I am not sure if we have been shafted by BT? Would like to know why all the views were not shown to the ref?

this is going to kill the game as we know it....not sure i want to continue chucking money at something i dont enjoy

It’s very strange that’s for sure. I think as a top team, we will benefit from this a lot going forward but it kills the moment. Two of the goals against Burton in the cup were sit on your hands moments they had used it that much.

Last night when Sterling scores I was going mental but the bloke in front said don’t get too excited lads, Aguero looked offside to me. That then stopped the celebrations stone dead and the inevitable review and disallowed
Goal followed. I looked at Pep and the coaching staff all running down the line and then it’s snatched away. You then have all the Spurs fans jumping wildly up and down and the bench celebrating a goal being disallowed.

I’ve no problem with the decisions as such, just the way they go about it.

I agree with you though, it could turn me off football if it becomes too intrusive.

We had a VAR decision at their place and Sergio missed it.

We have to ask why are we conceding 3 goals at home and why are we not scoring a single goal away from home?

We just didn't do enough in this tie and Spurs did and that is why we aren't through.

Llorente’s arm was in an unnatural position - no one jumps for a header like a pencil with their arm down

Deliberate hand ball for me

Yes I agree with all this, I was originally for VAR, but have now changed my view, and this isn't because
of the decision going against City. All the spontaneity and excitement is totally killed with the interminable delays,
listening to officials, scurrying over to the touchline, then standing gazing at a telly like someone in the grip of
Corrie fever. It's now becoming obvious that the flow of what was, last night, a fever pitched, end to end very
exciting game, was being stopped in its tracks by VAR.

It's definitely here to stay so I guess we'll just have to hope they get better at using it. I think it probably will improve in time and we'll probably get benefit out of it in the long run, but yeah it feels pretty cruel right now.

We were shit at defending thats what caused our elimination. We can blame VAR,the ref etc but people need to blame the players at the end of the day for shit marking.

Our players made some mistakes but so did our opponents. Eriksen's error at the end was piss poor but he got away with it because of a marginal offside against a player who gained no advantage from being "offside" but did from his quick reactions. Whilst a Spurs player scored by accidentally jumping into a ball, which travelled a long distance unhindered, with his elbow making first contact, a contact that it appears the referee couldn't see even with the help of VAR!

You said we deserved to lose; we did not. Overall, we played the better football in a drawn tie. We were eliminated by a stupid rule that distorts games. The players' errors were a factor, and they need addressing, but they were far from the only one.
