VAR (PL introduction 2019)

Then the rule is to blame. Not VAR for pointing out the infringement.
Change the rule to ‘goalies should be allowed off the line a little bit’ then VAR wont flag it up.

What happens if the VAR doesn't draw the on-pitch ref's attention to an infringement of the laws that is difficult to detect in real time with the naked eye? How would anyone know? There's too much wiggle room in the application. They're actually doing what they said they would never do, which is re-referee the game. What if the VAR OKs a marginal offside in the build up to a goal? Nobody gets to see a replay unless they're sat at home and TV replays simply aren't conclusive on the really tight offside calls that any smart linesman isn't going to flag. On the other hand, if he rules the goal out, thousands of cash-paying fans will feel duped because they've been jumping around punching the air. Bear in mind that City score a lot of fucking goals. It could end up as slapstick comedy with paying fans getting the pie in the face. The big problem with VAR in any sport is that it favours the armchair fan over the fan in the stadium. Wrong. Just wrong.

We also don't have camera's that have fast enough frame rates accurate enough for millimetres (or even centimetres), so its currently bollocks for me, not just on offsides either, the scottish keeper tonight could be fine or not, between one camera frame, that's not right, as its not giving the actual result.
Agreed, that’s been overkill from day one of it being introduced, the decisions are so marginal one frame shows her encroaching the other doesn’t.
We’ve had the same with offside decisions. Better to leave them be if they are so marginal.

Has the rule on encroachment into the penalty box been abolished? Seems unfair that VAR can be used to identify whether the goalkeeper has broken one rule when an attacking player could have broken another and scored from a saved penalty.

The new rule is worse, they have to have one foot on it, they could have both behind, and its a retake if its missed, even if the taker completely shanks it, that's ridiculous.

I assume it's to avoid a keeper taking a couple of yard run up - that would almost certainly lead to retaken penalties.

No, it hasn't. It's just not bothered with much - Vertonghen got away with almost being level with the taker this season and then blocked a follow-up on the line, when he should have been nowhere near, I think the VAR process will highlight this fairly quickly and it will be much reduced fairly quickly.

There are going to be loads of penalties this season - players will kick the ball at arms and then scream at the ref. I think it will need an advisory comment that if a ref thinks that the intention is deliberately to get a handball then it shouldn't be given.

The question then is 'what rates as marginal'. If a one frame advance makes a difference, how do you judge?

I think this is the biggest question, and ignoring the already-decided-that-it-will-screw-us people, will get a lot of focus. If you saw the Japan handball vs Scotland in the women's world cup, I thought that was a clear penalty, but wasn't reviewed.

VAR is in its infancy as a concept and as so will have a few (loads) of things to perfect, but as an individual I've NEVER been a fan of the idea, I'm a dinosaur who believes things even themselves out ( they don't always, but eh!), it will kill public house talking points and debate, and most of all relying on the dicks in charge to not fuck up the game I love (I'm 50). The penalty incidents for hand ball are a joke, yellow cards for a keeper encroaching at said penalty also a joke, should a keeper be sent off for doing it twice, really? We need to be careful of what we want and the people trusted to implement rule changes without ruining the whole game, OUR football, KIDS football, BLOKES GETTING OUT OF BED ON A SUNDAY MORNING STILL HALF PISSED football, EVERYBODIES football, we're trusting suited politicians to look after our game, it's beautiful simplicity, anyone can pick up a ball and have a game it really is that easy. One example of the rule changes these fuckin idiots come up with is the centre spot kick off rule change, WHY? has it enhanced the game? How much did it cost? Who benefits? Sorry if this is the wrong thread but it is slightly VAR related

Have a look on the BBC site of the penalty last night. If you freeze it when contact is made the keeper IMO is fine, one frame later she is off the line which is what VAR looked at - utter joke and will be manipulated over here in a manner too awful to contemplate

If the keeper starts behind the line and runs towards the approaching kicker and leaps, with no part of either foot having yet made contact with the line, will he still be penalized if he saves it? Weird if he is.

was think they should have another box inside the 6 yard area - like a 2 yard area for goalies to dive forwards

You can start on the line, not move forward at all, but leap into the air, and not have a foot on the line. The feckers at FICKFUFA just haven't thought it out, and certainly not looked at it from a goalkeepers perspective. I think what they were after was goalkeepers being made to stand stock still without using the word stationary in the text. They've got it wrong again. Wait for next season's CL games where an oppo goalie saves a City pen and doesn't have a foot on the line at the moment Sergio makes his strike, and said goalie is lauded and feted by team mates, commentator, opposiiton fans, the RDAHMeedya, and the week after FICKFUFA insert some more meaningless nonsense into the LotG to accommodate and explain away why Sergio didn't get a retake.

I think they would have been better manacling the goalie with a chain attached to one foot with the other end attached to one of the posts.

I posted this in the “FIFA women’s WC France 2019” thread, and I am posting it here too. I actually agree with you and him. The two of you have a valid point.

Offside doesn't come under the 'clear and obvious' standard. Offside is offside, it is a matter of fact

And a matter of 'fact' that the offside rule was invented to stop forwards gaining an 'unfair' advantage, not to be a defensive ploy.

Since teams started using it as a defensive weapon, the general rule was that calling offside for a foot or half a leg was incredibly harsh & in the interest of attacking football, if you are not sure, let it go in favour of the attack.

Now, a few millimetres means a goal is ruled out, even if the offside was in the buildup rather than the goal itself.

Some of the greatest goals of all time, would never have happened, under this system.

Football for robots.

So, with VAR coming in. What is the point of the Lino? All they have to do now is flag when the Ball leaves the pitch. VAR will be making all the decisions as the Lino doesn’t have to flag offside now, or if he does and gets it wrong, what are the consequences against the official?? It could be an absolute game changer. These are the decisions that need ironing out.
