Howard Webb is taking over at the World Cup, and I have a reasonable amount of faith he will be more competent at running things than Mike Riley.

Not only was he a better ref, he sounds intelligent enough in the few media appearances he's had and he simply must be more in touch with the modern game than Riley who hasn't refereed a game since 2008/09.
It’s a low bar, to be fair.
 
The ref did let it go, to be fair. If the VAR hadn’t got involved, that would have been that.

Fully expected them to get involved.

Fully expected the goal to be ruled out.

Was just stating a fact about what we have seen so far this season and heard from commentary re contact like that.
 
It was a foul, but what did the ref see in the replay that he couldn’t see from 3 yards away? Referees should get an automatic 1 match ban and no wages if they need a replay for such an obvious offence.
 
In the olden days pre VAR the challenge would be classed as six of one and half a dozen of the other, falling over in them circumstances didn't need a replay of overturning a decision
