Venezuela economy

Only works if it's done through taxation mate, you're confusing socialism and communism again.

What is the Swedish equivalent?
I’m not sure I am. Michael Foot wasn’t a communist and he wanted to nationalise the 100 (irrc) largest private companies in 1983. That is a million miles from Sweden's present economic system.

Public resources shouldnt be held in private hands, transport, health, education, energy, justice etc. How far past that was he willing to go? By the way I'm socialist and Foot was miles to the left of me.

Might have go the figure wrong too! I went off government spending as a percentage (now not sure if that’s the same thing!)
It’s more democratic socialism, with limited state ownership but extensive regulation. The Scandinavian countries tend to believe that this is the best way to produce a reasonably fair income distribution whilst not stifling economic growth.
Might be something in it, I suppose, given they always seem to top the happiest places to live polls.

Sorry @gordondaviesmoustache I could and really should have brought up regulation earlier, it's an important part of a socialist country. It just shows how resoundingly socialism worked in Europe that it's viewed as normal now. The yanks still think we're all bonkers communists though :)

Because the septics broke multiple international laws to hurt Venezuela as they didn't want an example set. Hardly a fault in Chavez's policies, more a fault in world politics that they were allowed to do it.

Have you seen what they got up to around that time?
I'm not sure firing Pdvsa management and replacing them with political appointees helped though.
Septics/oil/power always wins.
