Venezuela economy

It’s more democratic socialism, with limited state ownership but extensive regulation. The Scandinavian countries tend to believe that this is the best way to produce a reasonably fair income distribution whilst not stifling economic growth.
Might be something in it, I suppose, given they always seem to top the happiest places to live polls.
You’ve described it well and maybe my idea of what constitutes socialism needs looking at (by me, obviously). Perhaps it’s somewhat anachronistic and overly simplistic.

I admire the Swedish system, but wouldn’t describe myself as a socialist.

I'm not sure firing Pdvsa management and replacing them with political appointees helped though.
Septics/oil/power always wins.
Having a bigger gun doesn't mean you've got the best ideas, just the ability to enforce them. As I've already said Chavez was too far to the left for me, but the yanks having the influence to steamroller his country through being a superpower does not make him wrong.

Sorry @gordondaviesmoustache I could and really should have brought up regulation earlier, it's an important part of a socialist country. It just shows how resoundingly socialism worked in Europe that it's viewed as normal now. The yanks still think we're all bonkers communists though :)
I’m not sure I agree with your analysis.

We have far more regulation in the UK now than at any time from post WW2 up to the end of the last century (when the economy was run along more socialistic lines)

You'd probably describe yourself as a centrist mate, which shows you how convincingly that fight was won :)

You do and the Tories have to pretend to be to the left of the Democrat party to get elected. The Tory Brexiteers desperately want away from the EU to escape regulation and the redistribution of wealth. If socialism didn't win in Europe, why are JRM and Farage so desperate to leave? Fucking hell from WW2 to now even England has seen Labour replace the Liberals.

I'm pretty sure its not when one was comparing the impact of different political ideologies on peoples lives. That makes it absolutely relevant.

Not sure the different political ideologies of the current Venezuelan and British governments are the main reason for the different situations in the two countries tbh.

Now now, what's vast past imperial wealth worth in an argument?

;)

Ric I think you must have missed the point the other poster made to which I was replying.
