Last time i've been there in 2015. Lot's of great memories. Enjoy!
If i remember it right we took a water taxi or ferry. In general i think it doesn't make sense to rent a car in Italy, cause the toll ways are really pricy. It is very different from other European countries, in Czech republic we bought a vignetter for 10 days https://vignetteczech.eu for example and that was really cheap.

We visited Venice in December 2019 as we went to Verona for the Xmas week.
Took a day trip there on 22nd December. We had to buy welly type things when we got there because it was still quite flooded, especially around St Mark's Square.

We were also treated to an amazing winter sunset.

Next day we went to Lake Garda and took a cable car up Monte Baldo.

Great week away that one, just before cunty covid arrived.

Or just stay away from places like Venice.

Basically your getting mugged either way.

But the ship canal has a sustainable mugging economy where as Venice is literally sinking under the weight of obese cruise shipers.
