Vincent Kompany - 2016/17 performances

I've watched it once, at the game, directly in line of the pass, and I, and pretty well everyone around me, thought it was a piss poor back pass towards Bravo.
His body position suggests you are right. Lord that's worse than I thought then I thought then. Bad John Snow, bad John Snow. Very bad :(

It was a pass to Kompany who made the decision to jump forward for some daft reason when he should have been making himself available for the pass that Stones was obviously playing.Deary me !

Not from where I sit, and I'm directly inline with the direction Stones passed it towards, Bravo even moved slightly to the side to be more open. It was just an under hit back pass because Stones wasn't looking what he was doing. Vinny was already moving towards their player as we were in control of the ball (until the pass), and should have been looking to go forward.

Vinny was going in the right direction, and would not have anticipated a pass in his direction.

Regardless of Stones' pass, or Kompany's involvement in the mistake, his job there is not to move towards their player, but to find space to give Stones another option. The entire system relies upon as many of our players being available to the man in possession as possible.

There is absolutely no reason for Kompany to move towards Nathan Redmond in that situation, and there was no reason for him to be in the weird no mans land near Bravo, which pushed Bravo back towards his line in order to give Stones an option.

Kompany was not comfortable in the back 3, that was pretty clear watching and it's been mentioned by pretty much every analysis of the game.

This isn't a slight on VK, as far as I'm aware it's literally the first time he's ever played in a back 3 and he's not match fit, and he'll have been worrying about his injury on top of that.

He will get used to it, as will everyone else in the defence and these things will stop happening.

I think you'll find that, once in control of the ball, as we were, Pep demands we get it forward quickly to get on the attack, so there was no reason to go back to either Bravo (or Kompany), and Pep expects us to squeeze the opposition, can't have it both ways. It was just a piss poor pass, from someone that didn't look, a simple error by a player who should know better, who had a pretty awful first half if we're honest, someone noted, and bought for his composure.

Stop trying to pin the blame on Vinny, when it was the poster boy who was to blame, as it was last week V Evertom, when he made a challenge 10-15 yards into their half, missed, and we conceded.

I like Stones, he's a good player, who may well become a great here, but I'm not going to defend his mistakes when he makes them, he's young, he will.

I'm going to answer this point by point.

- I think you'll find that, once in control of the ball, as we were, Pep demands we get it forward quickly to get on the attack,

This is fundamentally not true, and if you actually think that, you haven't been watching us at all.

Pep wants his teams to keep hold of the ball for 15 passes in order for the team to find it's shape and to cause the opposition to lose shape - this has been detailed at length in many Pep articles and in Pep Confidential where Pep is directly quoted:

If there isn't a sequence of 15 passes first, it's impossible to carry out the transition between defence & attack.Impossible.

- there was no reason to go back to either Bravo (or Kompany)

Yes there was - Sané was miles up his wing, unavailable for a pass, and no one else was available. There were no other passing options other than back towards the goal. This is a breakdown of the system, he should have at least 3 options at all times.

- a simple error by a player who should know better, who had a pretty awful first half if we're honest, someone noted, and bought for his composure.

It was an error made by a 22 year old playing in a brand new system, next to a new CB partner who was not in the right position, getting pressed and with the rest of his team not doing their job of giving him 3 or 4 passing options.

- Stop trying to pin the blame on Vinny, when it was the poster boy who was to blame

I didn't try to pin the blame on any one individual, I apportioned blame to the multiple players who were at fault. Sané, Kompany and Stones. The fact you need to refer to Stones as "The poster boy" betrays the fact you apparently can't look at this objectively.
