Vincent Kompany - 2016/17 performances

Much as we all love VK, Pep has created intense competition for places. He will need to win his place on merit or else rotate, much like anybody else. This is a key feature of our season to date, in stark contrast to last year.

Is it just me who really hates the idea of either Otamendi or Stones being dropped permanently just to make way for Kompany? I love VK but can he really do a much better job than either of these two? And even if he can, is it worth disrupting the team? We saw last season that our constant changing of CB partnerships as and when Kompany was fit made life very difficult for Mangala and Otamendi. Wouldn't put Kompany in there until he'd been at full fitness for a good month anyway, seeing as rushing him back last year did us no favours. Unless we drop to three at the back, I will feel very bad for whichever one gets dropped as they don't deserve it at all.

I 'm hoping Pep won't do it because a part of me would rather see Otamendi and Stones stay on as first choice and keep building this brilliant partnership, especially after the derby. Treason, I know.

I would feel the same if it was Pellers in charge but now with Pep, I just trust in what he does and will do so don't think about it too much.

Kompany is our best defender, he has been for years. But your point about him disrupting the stones and otamendi partnership is a good one, I'm sure peps thought about that already. I think it could be vinnies last chance to prove he can stay fit, if not he will be gone.

Vk needs time on the pitch with the lads to get up to speed with the required playing style, so should the day come when hes needed in a big game he slots right in. Pep also needs to see how he copes with the system under pressure in a real game. The current partnership will have to deal with being split up occasionally also, so then they have experience with coming back into the fold after a break.

WAS! Was our best defender. He'd have to compete now an earn a place.

Otamedi and Stones have both looked Kompany-level good at times, only a few weeks in, and he might not have the passing ability of either of them.

Probably the right idea not risking him today, I think we can expect to see him at least once in these back-to-back games against swans

Yeah, right.

The closest Otamendi has looked to Kompany in his pomp was the United game, and even then wasn't as good as Vincent.

And Stones, good player, but not as good as Kompany or Otamendi in my opinion.

Maybe not, but in my eyes that won't matter if Kompany can't put a long run of game together.

Thought Kompany might have come on when Otamendi went off. Didn't really understand that substitution. Thought that it was an ideal moment for Kompany to get match practise in a game that was won.

Should get 45 mins at Swansea?

I'd imagine he'll start at Swansea in the cup alongside Tosin.
Possibly. I'd like to see Stones and Kompany together eventually though Kolarov is on fire at the moment. Only in a Pep team could you say a central defender is on fire, but it's true.

Good analysis on motd last night.

I can only imagine Otamendi had taken knock or Pep had decided he might pick up another yellow therefore had to substitute him earlier than planned. And he obvs felt Vinny was only up to 15 mins.

Having said that I don't understand why he didn't come on as the third sub for the last 15 mins. 4 up, full house at home- would have got a great ovation and just enough time to have a stretch.

Think the idea was for 10/15 mins late in the game but Moss in the Bournemouth kit fucked that off with the booking.

Suspect he'll get 20 mins max in the cup. There's no need to rush him back at all. Gentile game management is the key.
