Virgin media

I would steer clear at the moment. Virgin Media Area 20 covers a large portion of Manchester and the peak time speeds are terrilble due to oversubscription. Same with some areas in Stockport, and many others around the country. I would have a look on the Virgin Media help forums. Join up and ask the question on there. They will help you with info about your area.

They are apparently getting my area sorted but keep pushing back the fix date months at a time.

Was talking about this only an hour ago. My mother is in Oldham and her Virgin broadband has been giving her shit all week

I'm with Sky at the moment and was hoping to move to Virgin Media but many I know in Wythenshawe and surrounding areas on Virgin Media and are having really slow network speeds. In fact this has stopped me from switching over to them.

They seem to be having real problems keeping up with the new customers which is putting the network undr severe pressure in certain areas.

It sucks that they are taking new customers in these areas knowing full well that they cannot deliver anywhere near the headline speeds.

Its not affecting everybody but is affecting many. I would just suggest a little investigation into the current state of affairs with them in your area before thinking of switching.

VM drops to 1MB at peak times, plus upload isn't brilliant - at 2/3mb. BT uploads are 19mb-ish. I've heard that gaming is better on BT technology for some reason - not sure why.

Zen internet seem to be the best FTTC provider and are Rochdale based - but this is the same technology as BT. I think Sky only do upto 38MB.

Some buildings have FTTP which is speeds around 1GB - check Hyperoptic (and Zen do their own) but don't think it's in Manchester yet.

My phone quality is shit too - it doesn't work when it rains but they can't find out what's wrong. I binned their mobile service as no 4G.

Plus, Virgin = Indian call centres. Really shit ones too. I'm getting rid of them totally, soon.

I had big problems with Virgin for about 6 months, could not get the advertised speeds. Had engineer visits, new coax from the street box, changed router channels, all sorts. Then one day tried Firefox browser instead of Chrome on my macbook and the difference was amazing, the laggy page loading I had with chrome vanished instantly. Very good service now and they bumped me up to 152 Mbps for free. Tivo box is average though, very clunky.

They tell me I'm on 152Mb and I get 160Mb!

And it's going up to 200Mb in a month or so for no extra cost.

With four laptops and mobiles, games consoles and a tablet, our family is very data hungry but I can still watch a streamed match if I want.

Had no problems with customer service, who send an engineer round early next day if it's something they can't fix over the phone.

On the TV side I get BT Sport HD free with my XL pack. I won't pay the extra for Sky.

Pity to hear all these tales of woe, hope my virgin doesn't go the same route. Bit of a monopoly as Virgin seems to be the only provider where you don't need to fork out a line rental on top of the BB cost.
