Was it all a big mistake

I don't get the idea behind putting the club on hold for a couple of seasons whilst we wait on Pep so i don't give it much credence, why would we tread water for 2 seasons just to get Pep for 3 seasons ?

A mistake to hire him at that time? No, there wasnt much available at the time that was preferable at the time. At the time his appointment was viewed as acceptable.

Looking back though yes a big mistake, he has good tactical awareness, but his manamanagement, or his influence on an under-performing teams is zero.

He would be great at Premier Manager 2015 where people are just numbers.

i for one will cherish that season of 13/14 and the outrageous amount of goals, the frankly sexual football and the league title. i loved it.

Quite right too. If you wanted to argue it that way, every league that has ever been won has been won because other teams cocked it up. That season, in particular, we scored the second highest number if goals ever scored in the PL and fought off the team that got the 3rd highest. To argue that we, somehow, earned it by default is the sort of argument i'd expect from rag fans under 15 or journalists. To hear it being aired by a minority of our own fans is disappointing to say the least.

Yeah I don't get it either. Same goes for the first title win. In both cases it seems to be more about beating up on the manager at the time as if somehow we won it despite who was in charge which over 38 games is nonsense.

I am not Pellers biggest fan but he did win a title and for that alone he should be appreciated. I also enjoyed the two CC wins so to answer the OP no appointing Pellers was not a big mistake. Keeping Pellers for this season was a big mistake. Employing say Rafa for a season would have made more sense but as we all know everything took second place to the grand plan so the board gambled this season. The success of that gamble hinged on two points. One was securing Pep and the other was avoiding disaster under Pellers. Right now the jury is still out on this season being a disaster, ie getting a CL spot, although it looks grim at the moment. Get a CL spot and the appointment of Pellers gets you overall a C- and a passing grade(ish).

I cherish the good of the Mancini years as well as 13/14.

But the notion of keeping him and all would have been better? Where's he gone since? Galatasaray? The Serie A version of Liverpool? The fact that no one at the level at which we aspire to be is ever seriously linked with him? Or even un-seriously linked with him?

I remember Ancellotti being spoken of late that year when Mancini tried his absurd little power play with the upper levels of ADG.

In hindsight Carlo would have been a better idea if do-able. I do imagine he'd have a lot of the same issues getting this bunch motivated that Pellers has had, though.

I am a bit p*ssed off with modern football and the lack of willingness of pampered players to give their all for a manager who they may not see completely eye to eye with.
If the club had backed Mancini and binned some high profile player(s) as an example I think that we would have won more than we have under Manuel.
Unfortunately it is easier to sack the manager nowadays as Jose found out to his cost.
If baconface were to join united in these modern times he would not have been a success. The era of the long term manager is gone and the players will just get richer.

Not building upon the initial breakthrough in 2012 in the transfer market was our biggest mistake. I know internal politics and FFP came into the equation but prudent purchases of quality rather than the scattergun approach of the last few years would have consolidated our position. I know it is very easy to be critical of decisions made when you are on the outside but I think we could have done better in this department. Sometimes been rich and having an increased wish list can be a disadvantage and I fear that this is what has happened us. Add in the fact that City like many other clubs seem to buy players to fit into a set role and squad rather than a more enlightened approach which views players as been brought in to be part of a flexible system. In a nutshell we set out to be holistic but in the narrow rather than broad sense. It is to be hoped that Pep will be given not only the financial backing but the space and time to set about building a genuine holistic system.

You know when I was a kid and my brother used to fall out with people (which for a while he did a lot) my mother used to say, isn't there a common denominator here son, you. So if different managers are "losing the dressing room" because the players don't get on with him then surely it is the players not the manager? They, the players, are the common denominator!! I love our team but surely they have to think about this themselves and stop hiding behind the 'get the manager out' scenario.

What happens if they do the same to this Guardiola man?
