A £50k watch can stop working and then it becomes a very expensive watch to mend! A £1.99 quartz watch that stops working can get chucked in the 'small electricals' at the local tip and a new one purchased for £1.99! What did I say about remembering quality and low price in a post t'other day?!!

Depends some are assets that increase in value due to rarity, so watches, some jewellery and definitely certain cars are a worthwhile investment.

I'm on the waiting list for a Rolex Daytona and if I ever get offered one (they tend to look after their regulars) i'll snap it up for £10,200... They sell for around £25,000 for the base model so it's a cast iron "investment"

If I do get one (ordered black) i'll immediately put my name down for a white one too

Ironically, that person worked hard, creating cheap, bland, mass produced stuff to make enough money to spaff on an obsolete item.

If you want an example of how good an investment cars can be, back in the late 80s early 90s the arse fell out of the classic car market.
At a classic car show, someone was selling a 1964 Aston DB5 for £30k. It was far from perfect condition but probably could have been considered fair.
Fast forward to today and you would be lucky to pick one up in similar condition for less than £300k. That’s a 10 fold increase in value, much more than virtually all property over the same period of time.

It's my Dad's old one. I have a photo of me as a baby with him holding me. He's wearing the watch.

Means far more to me than wanking 50k on a Rolex.

I understand why people buy nice things even though some of the nice things that people buy look frivolous on the outside.

People who like to buy art IMO aren't buying something nice they are buying an investment, weirdly they want to pay more for something so they can sell it for more, the world of high art is crammed with frauds and charlatans.

Most things that are expensive are an investment so you have every chance of getting your money back or at least a large chunk of it, there are however people who spend a fortune on food and wine which is a one shot deal, I see that as a waste of money when it is a massive overspend in reality it is rich people paying not to eat in the same space as Chantelle and her 4 children.

So to all you people who like nice watches just carry on, you've probably earned the right to have a mechanical marvel you haven't bought from Argos for £30, and if I had that much disposable income I would join you in your watch appreciation.
