Everton are even struggling with the developement model from the championship etc now as they cant afford the wages Lescott is on £35k a week 1 / 5th of Terrys weekly wage after his hike. Is Terry 5 times better ?

They lost out on Naughton as Spuds were offering him double the wages plus they couldnt match the fee.

People assume that these clubs will get all the fee they receive to spend and that they can get equal or better players for less money. I would suggest that in the current market this is HIGHLY unlikely.
 
Arsenal had no regular centre back pairing all last season and still came 4th. Agger and Skrtel were swapped around with Carragher, Evans and Ferdinand (coz of injury) with Vidic. Chelsea's kept swapping around too.

It's not just about the players, it's what they're being asked to do and how effective work on the training ground is.
 
Time to start looking abroad and I feel MH will look in Germany as we have exhausted the PL.

Dont forget the % of foreign players in th PL is...................

I think the same. But I also though O'Neil was crazy to give Watford £12m for Young but he is worth double that in todays market.

They play with a big man upfront and Downing has one strength in his delivery.

HEs decent player 30 but still got 4 seasons in him at least. Cappello obviously rates him he plays regular for England now and we have and excellent defensive record under him.

I would be pleased to have him in our squad. Much better player than Dunne or Ben Haim.

I think that may be the point. He may well be better than TBH and now Dunnie, but he's perhaps not as good as we were hoping for. We've done the business up front so it seems a bit of an anticlimax if we end up with Upson. Know what I mean?
 
On defence - Toure, Upson and definately Lescott would improve us, personally i'd start looking abroad and Lescott.

To get top 6 should be nearly a formality without new defenders - we are stronger up front and that includes holding the ball up not just scoring and stronger in midfield - Just these improvements should enable us to hold the ball more therefore less stress on the existing defense. Also Given was only here from Jan and he certainly made us better.

Add to that Villa have been weakened and Everton likewise if Lescott comes.

Personally I think we also need the vreative midfielder to help break teams down after watching the SA games although Ireland didn't play in the final game.

I expect with what we have we will score more and conceed less than last season and get at least an additional 10 points just from away form alone

Tin hat maybe but he is also better than Richards and Nedum at this moment in time.

Please note that I said at this time, no doubt Nedum will go on to be better than him. ANd Richards as well.

I have not doubted any of our academy players in making this post.

I agree with this as well. If people are turning their nose up at Upson they cant watch much football. Hes much better than what we have available at the moment. Loads of prem experience and he is english so will integrate quickly.

We would get him for around £10 million or maybe less with some of our cast off players. Good business IMO.
 
I think we need to ease up a bit on the Richards thing. Last year's form was a worry but he's only 20. I know he's got a bit bling of late, but what a bonus a return to form would be. Unless people think he was a one season wonder. At the very worst, the jury is out.

Not having a go at Richards by any stretch. He has the potential to be a great player. And you know what, he would learn from Upson as well.
 
For people that are not keen on Upson who can we get that is better, will come and available at this stage. This is on the assumption that we sign Toure and Lescott as we are clearly in for them currently.

Upson has been much better over the last 2 seasons than Toure for example plus he wont miss a month or so after christmas with the African nations cup.

He is a highly rated player, Arsenal, Chelsea a Liverpool have all been linked with him over the last season or so, its his age and the fee that West Ham want that has been the problem. He would do an excellent job for us for the next 3 years or so.

Not saying you were. But it's safe to say, he's coming in for a bit of a pasting by some on these boards recently.
 
It's all well and good people saying kompany is a good cb etc etc, hughes just won't play him there, the only times hughes has ever put him there is because of an injury during a game, he obviously doesn't like playing kompany in that position of he would have started 1 or 2 games last season there.

Right, everyone who disagrees with you is a rag? I've got a right to my opinion, and if you'd bothered to read my post I was saying the problem is with the manager (and therefore tactics and motivation) and specifically not the players. I said the players we had last year were good enough to do better in some games and ended up losing.

I agree, it's getting tedious that people are getting labelled as rags just because they dare to have a different opinion. It's childish and boring, I thought the purpose of Bluemoon was so we could discuss things about the club rationally.
 
i dnt agree with this thread atall if we finished 9th last season i think with people like tevez,ade and barry will defonatley make us top 4!

Kompany played centre half away at Schalke and had a good game if memory serves me right. Also made the interception and pass that led to the first goal.
