OK, I’ve had a few hours to calm myself and give everything some thought. I love City and I want us to win the League, so I am going to take a positive tack here. Don’t think, however, that my glasses are rose coloured (especially because that would mean they would be RED and that would suck) as you read this. I have not been happy with our overall form of late with our central defense a mash unit, and I am aware that we have not looked our best in the last couple matches (last 20 minutes against Chelsea notwithstanding). Anyway, indulge me for a moment, will you fellow Blues?
First off, although I ABSOLUTELY understand that all the Rags need is a point on Monday to go top, for today we are technically top of the League. If the roles had been reversed as of this morning and them lot had gotten a point to go up temporarily on GD alone, what do you all think the papers, TV networks and websites would be BLASTING? They’d be blasting the fact that “Unflappable Man United Have Reclaimed Top Spot”, right? Right, so I have no problem with anyone who wants to say it about us at this time.
So, today we left the Brit with a point. Not bad, when you think about it. Stoke away is a daunting fixture for ANY side, period. You could just ask:
Chelsea (draw)
Liverpool (loss)
ManUre (draw)
Spurs (loss)
Including us, that’s 9 points taken from the Top 5 teams in the League at home for them. They are in the Premiership because of their home form, and it is their home form that keeps them in the Premiership, period. Stoke’s GD is a -16 away from the Brit. At home they are a +4. It is a tough place to play, what with all the old school “hard man” defending and the support shrieking like banshees. Also, we left there with a point with no Vinnie, no Lescott and no Aguero.
No Vinnie and no Lescott meant Micah in the middle which took away the element of him barging forward on his side and offering us some needed width from the right. Today’s reality was this: like him or not, Dzeko was up front and if we were going to get service in to him (expected tactic with a lanky striker on) it would have helped to have a stronger right back to balance Clichy’s runs and increase the frequency of switching up the point of attack. Yes, PabZab has acquitted himself well in the last 2 games, but that doesn’t mean we can’t admit that we would’ve been stronger with VK and JL in the center and MR and GC outside. Also, having to start a backline that has so little time together meant that we were never likely going to take as many chances from the back, as I would guess Bobby Manc preached defensive responsibility going into play.
In fairness, I will say that Dzeko was given a gorgeous cross by Clichy in the first half and he failed to even get the ball on frame. Considering the quality of service, I’d say that was far from acceptable.
No Aguero meant that we lost the services of a striker who had scored three times in his last two matches. Couple Sergio’s recent run of form with Mario’s poor performance against Chelsea, and I’m sure you could easily make a claim that Mancini would have much rather started Aguero today. I don’t think Mario really brought too much to the match, and the moment where he got up from a (admittedly physical) challenge and ran over the back of a Stoke player directly in front of Webb was absolutely inexcusable. Yes, the kid is capable of brilliance in front of goal, but until he is also capable of controlling his childish temper, he is often going to be a fucking liability on the pitch. And yes, I can like him as a striker and a personality and still see the bad parts of his game. I’m tired of hearing that it has to be one way or the other on here.
Another issue I have with the way things went down today was that we seemed to lose the plot completely late (especially after Milner replaced Zabs). When Pulis took off Ethrington, I was hoping for the same effect that taking Torres off did for us in the Chelsea game. Yes, I know they play different positions. Regardless, both are good two-way players and I was hoping Ethrington’s absence would make them easier to open up as we were really pressing for a bit. Once JM was subbed on, though, the odd lineup seemed to handcuff us and we quickly became muddy in our thinking. Add to that a good dose of typical time wasting for a side in Stoke’s position, and you had a draw.
At the end of the day, we escaped with a point and (from what I could see) no major injuries. I’d guess it’s safe to assume we’ll get one (if not both) of our ailing central defenders back for Sunderland, as well as Aguero. Do them at ours(as we should) and then take it from there. For now, thees. Only thees. One game at a time is the only logical way to look at it. Even if the Rags give Fulham a total hiding come Monday, we will still have to take it one game at a time.
It’s far from over, as far as I’m concerned. It is impossible to take any single stretch of this season to date and find nine wins on the trot for the rags. Thus, I don’t expect it to happen now. Football ees strange. Let’s all take a nice hot bath and gear up for Sunderland at ours, where we are very hard to beat. Keep getting results and we will keep pressure on United. If they’re gonna pip us here at the end, wouldn’t it be better to force them to play their very best football every week by keeping ourselves in it rather than rolling over for them?
I think so, anyway.
