Were you racist in 1984?

Used to say 'bobble head' to the young Sikh lads at my school. My best friend at school was a lad called Nadeem yet it never stopped me or lots of other white AND black kids saying the 'P' word.

The term 'paki' was said a hell of a lot in the old days as it hadn't quite become a racial term rather than a shortening of the word Pakistani.

My two best friends are half Mauritian and I once discussed the issue with them and their father. They all said they got a bit sick of being called the 'p' word as they are clearly African.

I guess you learn as you grow up.

Its only really offensive in the UK were the idiots have been allowed to take control of the word. Are you to intellectually challenged to comprehend that ?

You running around the world bitching and moaning at people and accusing them of being racist for no reason. Just goes to show what a short sighted fuckwit of the highest order you really are. Australia has never had historically the same kind of use for that word. Christ pom has more negative undertones then bleeding paki in Australia.

Firstly, you've called me a wanker, a short sighted fuckwit, and intellectually challenged so far in this thread. I suggest you wind that neck in before I snap it. Secondly, I'm not sure you "get" it, so we'll leave it there. You want to continue the discussion, send me a PM with your number and we'll find an appropriate time to get together to discuss it like grown ups and without meme's and glib one liners.

In case you've missed this, I've lived in Australia. I know their culture pretty well.

You called a racist and an attention seeker now your going to snap my neck

Name a time and a place NOW nob head.

I don't think you're racist, just incredibly misguided and ill informed. I didn't call you a racist, my original post in this thread is pretty self explanatory. You chose to call me a wanker and things have descended from there. If you genuinely want a discussion or at least to be enlightened by someone who is a "Paki" then my offer stands. Send me a PM and we can get together and talk about it.

I genuinely don't understand what you're trying to say there. Are you saying that white people have never been called "Paki" therefore they can never understand why it's racist or hurtful?

Yeah, I was neither particulary succint or articulate :)

What I mean is, the word "paki" is just a shorterned word, such as brit. On its own it is not hurtful. It is the connotations and the manner in which it has been used.

The degree of how hurtful a pharse it is, is due to its cultural etymology. It has been transformed into a word of hatred.

White british people have no exposure to such large-scale abuse due to their cultural identity, or skin colour.

Hence why in some cases people question why this word is so offensive, rather than actually a shortened term such as "brit"

basically, I'm being longwinded. I don't think those who question why "Paki" should be an offensive term are racist, I think its because they have had no exposure to wholesale hatred and don't realise that it is so much more than the word that hurts.

Now I take that as a threat to kill me and I don't take shit like that lightly. Now fucking name a time and place and I'll be there.

And what? You'll be there? You're really making a tit of yourself right now. So calm down, take a deep breath, compose yourself and we'll start again.

You're wrong. You're earlier post to Ammy although admirable in it's idealism, was incredibly misguided. You can't uninvent the wheel and you can't un-racialise "Paki" no matter how much you may want to. I've shown you in my post about Aborigines why Australians should have no problem understanding why "Paki" is deemed offensive. They have an incredibly similar racial epithet.

Do you think it's ok for people to question why it's racist to make a hissing sound at a Spurs match?

I'm Melbourne mate and it's rife in fact I'm about 70km out which is provincial by Australia's standards. The irony is you hear that old classic "...they do a good curry though". Must be reassuring for the local Indian population. In addition quite a few drive cabs so imagine what they go through on the weekends.
My ex-wife is part Indian and I swear I found out who my mates were when we were courting. Good riddance to them

I found the same when I was out there to be honest. Some lovely people but some fucking backwards attitudes towards race. Possibly the saddest/funniest thing I heard was during the Tampa crisis when the evening news channel did a vox pop asking "what should we do with the refugees on that ship?" - some fella answered "feed them to the bloody sharks".

Funny old world when you find yourself having to defend your right to be offended by a racial epithet.

In fairness (wrong word)..... they also seem to have sexism issues there as well.
