Were you racist in 1984?

I have never been racist.

The pub around the corner from me has NF sprayed on it walls, i still hate that pub

When I was a kid every time I usde to see NF sprayed on walls I always thought it stood for Nottingham Forest. I must have been about 30 before I realised :-(

I remember lots of jokes about black people when I was a kid. As you grow up though and a lot of your mates and workmates are black or mixed race, the jokes became non existent.

No I never saw racism when I went to City, to be fair I think I can remember things being shouted like ''Get the black bastard'' etc towards a palyer but very rare. I know my old man would never have put up with it if somebody near him shouted anything. He was always up for it at a game, working man's pleasure and a release from a shit week of work and no money I suppose but he's always been right down the line with racism. He was a Catholic and married a Protestant and it caused loads of shit and he told everyone to go fuck themselves he'd marry a black, green, purple woman if he loved them. He always got on with the Italians Sivoris and Grannellis and was mate's in the 60's with a couple of black lads and he always told me how he stood side ny side with them taking and giving it out. He also twatted a City fan for calling Trautmann a German so and so when he joined us but thats another story.

A couple of months ago I was flicking through the TV channels one evening and there was an old episode of Only Fools and Horses on, must have been from the early 80's, watched it for 5 minutes and Rodney was talking to Del about what they would do for food and things if there was a nuclear attack. Del replied that he shouldnt worry as there would still be a paki shop open somewhere. The audience roared with laugher at that. I was more amazed that the line hadnt been cut out from being shown on UK Gold or whatever it was on!
Why's that not still funny now. It is to me.

It's funny and true.

Almost everyone is a casual racist in a harmless and acceptable way. This includes people from all races.

Then there are the book ends at each end of the shelf. One end is a group of shithouses who are the sort who get offended at everything; the other end are the spiteful wankers who hold true prejudices towards other races.

When I was about 10 years old (circ 1973) there was a black lad in our class at school. One day, just to provoke a reaction, I called him a "******" Another lad said "don't call him that, he doesn't like it" to which I replied "OK, I'm sorry"
Move forward five years at Secondary school and the black lad is a pupil there and by now he's a fucking hard bastard. After school one evening I saw him kick the living shit out of a bully and I thought "thank God I apologised"
