Were you racist in 1984?

Grew up in Manchester with "paki bashing" songs and "paki shops" as part of the normal vernacular. However, I'm glad to see and hear that my own children are growing up color-blind and have a group of friends that includes people of numerous races, ethnicities and a fair number of people anyone would have trouble determining their racial or ethnic heritage.

In another generation (my grandkids) they will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about.....and that is a good thing!

being racist just shows how much effort you put into being stupid

Not in 1984 it wasn't,being racist was the norm it seems,it wasn't an effort,it was normalized, out of ignorance mostly, but still racist, nowadays there is no excuse for racism.

I must have been, after being smacked about by a very large black lady one night in a very rough club come blues place .
It resembled the fight scene with della reese and eddy murphy in the film harlem nights. She punched me a few times and because I didn't do anything but walk away she then proceeded to spike me in the head with her stiletto heel and all for still seeing her sister.
I was urged on by the baying crowd too hit her back has she was winging again at me,which I did just the once catching her full on the nose, she didn't budge. I do believe if the so called bouncers didn't drag her out she would have totally battered me.
I do believe I called her a fucking black woman after the stiletto pierced my head

I must also admit I might have called her a fat woman at some point afterwards so must have been a fatist at the same time.

I do think in this day I would be called racist for saying that to her ignoring the fact I was seeing her black sister and her telling me I couldn't for being white. It's a strange world we live .

was referring to some in the thread who seem to be proud to be racist..in those days it was more just blind ignorance a lot of the time....Manning and the millionaire club...Jim Davidson and Chalky White...most thought it funny at the time....now a lot more look back and cringe

When I was a kid every time I usde to see NF sprayed on walls I always thought it stood for Nottingham Forest. I must have been about 30 before I realised :-(

Did you think BNP an a learning disabilites painting of Preston North End?

When we kids pal i never saw rascism at City. did you?

I remember beinSwwwg away at Leeds away in the late 70s and the cool cats arrived. You could see them through the railings, I was in the ground a scared kid, they just walked down the middle of the road cool as fuck. Nobody went near them.

I think that day more than most made me think we are nor of ant race we are blues

No I never saw racism when I went to City, to be fair I think I can remember things being shouted like ''Get the black bastard'' etc towards a palyer but very rare. I know my old man would never have put up with it if somebody near him shouted anything. He was always up for it at a game, working man's pleasure and a release from a shit week of work and no money I suppose but he's always been right down the line with racism. He was a Catholic and married a Protestant and it caused loads of shit and he told everyone to go fuck themselves he'd marry a black, green, purple woman if he loved them. He always got on with the Italians Sivoris and Grannellis and was mate's in the 60's with a couple of black lads and he always told me how he stood side ny side with them taking and giving it out. He also twatted a City fan for calling Trautmann a German so and so when he joined us but thats another story.

Jesus, you two must have been wearing ear muffs and blinkers in the 1980's.

I stood in the Kippax and heard loads of monkey chants. John Chiedoze of Notts County being one notable, but far from exclusive example.

What about the hissing when we played Spurs?

What about the 'one Salman Rushdie' chants to the Asian ref when Derby County dicked us 6-0 at the Baseball Ground?

Maybe it's only middle class people that notice these things ;-)
