West Brom offer to trial safe standing - rejected page 2

Think its more they would have to listen to lobbyists have a vote on it draw up legislation, and from their point of view they just think why bother. I presume as Celtic have it its a devolved thing so assuming they come up I wonder if Swansea and Cardiff could get approval, It might give premier league teams a bit more leverage if they did.
Ah well, my 110 shin pads have a couple of seasons in them yet ;)

Maybe blind optimism but I reckon it’ll happen. Shame, this setback.

What I don't get is that government legislation says that all stadiums in the top 2 divisions have to be all-seated but not that everyone has to sit. That's the responsibility of the Football Licensing Authority.

So as far as I see it, there doesn't actually need to be a change in the law, just how it's enforced locally.

Guess it’s about money we (as a country) don’t have. More important things to spend it on rather than look into this and write and approve policy about it (if that’s what’s needed). Premier league should foot the bill and make it happen, leaving minimal government resources to rubber stamp it...?

They should give us a reason - no reason just winds people up.

We do have the money but it's not about money. Governments, all governments, have their own agendas and whatnot, but safe standing isn't one of them, not for this government anyway. As I said when a civil servant came with this safe standing proposal to whichever minister it is that deals with this sort of thing, they will do a simply calculation, does saying yes benefit me or the government? Answer: No.

If safe standing screws up will we get the blame for having said yes? Answer: Yes.

Then the answer to safe standing is no.

As for giving a reason, why should they do that? Has saying no altered your voting intentions? I doubt it, so why should they care?

Thats interesting. So a club could put in rail seating and not fall foul of the legislation. Just leave the seats up?

The government said, in 2013, that they wouldn’t look at it unless there was a clear demand. There is.
The Lib Dem’s had it in their manifesto in 2015 but obviously got mullered. The Taylor report had 76 recommendations, one of which was that ALL sports should have all seater stadia, which was ignored.
In fact, Tom Pendry, chair of the Parliamentary all party football committee, wrote a report recommending that safe standing should be integral and the Taylor report had gone too far. That was in 1992 but rejected by David Mellor.
Given that promoted league one clubs have 3 years to convert, what if one of those secures back to back promotions?
Not allowing it is a bloody disgrace and football fans are treated like shit as ever. One thing I will say though is that many, many fans on here think the club should ‘take action’ against the media and against referees. Now, I’ve done my share of standing and am quite happy to sit for the rest of my city watching time, I would certainly support a ‘day of action’ type thing, if football fans could be arsed and get themselves organised. Imagine day 1 of the 2018/19 premier league and championship with no supporters in the grounds. It could be a joint protest on safe standing and ticket prices and would only need to happen for one day, as the PL would crap itself.
Trouble is it won’t happen, as we’d rather just blame everyone and everything than rise up in protest. We actually deserve what we get!

You've clearly never organised a demo, it's a nightmare and on the scale you're talking about, with unanimity of purpose, across the country, at every ground? Impossible. But the impossibility of organising such a thing proves nothing, it does not lead to...... "We actually deserve what we get!"

Maybe not, but we moan about ticket prices and yet pay more every season. There is a reason football fans are treated with contempt and yet they just lie down and take it. City fans protested about Arsenal prices and that was a significant contributor to £30 maximum away prices.
As for organising a demo, if everyone who purports to support safe standing who attends matches (about 70%) agrees to miss the first home match of the season, there would be uproar. PL matches with no fans is the stuff of nightmares for the PL, the TV companies and the government.

Rather depressing then. Guess online petition has been done? For whatever that’s worth. And I’m probably not alone to have never written to my local mp.

No. English law encompasses Wales too.

However, there is no primary legislation needed. The law stating stadiums be all seated is a regulation issued by the Minister under the Football Spectators Act 1989 - what's known formally as secondary legislation.
The Minister can repeal the anti-standing areas ban in the top two divisions in England & Wales with a stroke of her pen. All she needs to do is sign what's known as an Order in Council repealing the ban. Job done.
