West Ham (A) Post Match Thread

It took us ages to get going, & our passing was very sloppy in the first half. We looked rusty, but still showed flashes of brilliance when it mattered most.

Mahrez stepped up to the plate & was a constant danger. Sterling grew into the game & was clinical in the 2nd half.

Rodders has to learn to react quicker. Several times he put himself under unnecessary pressure by dawdling on the ball, but overall he was assured & was a big asset. Pep seems soaked on him, so that bodes well for City.

It was a brilliant reverse pass by Silva for Sterling, but Silva was worryingly wilting quite early. Foden will hopefully be introduced earlier in matches, as he's needed to plug the gap of an ageing Silva. We just have to hope he's developed enough to bridge the gap between youth football & man football.

Over all, the match ended well & we were comfortable. We don't usually hit our stride until the international break in September, so hopefully we'll keep up our performances in the meantime.

VAR is weird. When Sterling's last minute winner was chalked off in the CL QF's, I went from elation to disbelief & despair in 5 seconds. It was nowhere near like that today, but cheering a goal & having to wait to see if it will be allowed spoils that instant moment.

Unfortunately, we'll all have to get used to it.

Good run down, brekkie at the OK Diner near the former Fox Inn on the A1. Parked at Epping and tube to Stratford.
The view from row 70 requires binoculars at first but you soon get used to it. Good run back with some trough at Peterborough services.
As for VAR: It get the decisions correct, certainly the main ones in our game today, but it takes away some of the spontaneity of cheering a goal. Sort of 60% cheering the ball going in the net and 40% when VAR approves it.
The "third" goal also brought up another problem; that of boosting one team and deflating the other. West Ham were clearly up for it once the VAR decision went for them, as the goal had been awarded and they were ready to kick off 3-0 down. I think they'd have received far less of a boost had the lino flagged and a free kick for offside been awarded.
Other than that, we were a bit too sloppy in the first half but less so after the break. Rodri looks bloody good, Raz will get a lot this season and Mahrez is looking much better.
And Eddie's double save was excellent.
On the train from Hackney Wick to Stratford a West Ham fan said we deserved our success as we stuck with the team in the bad days. He also described the rags and dippers as "wankers" which got a cheer from both sets of fans in the carriage.

Rodders is still auditioning to be Javi Garcia at times.

Dawdling is being kind.

Lots of positives again though so I’m not worried.

Rodders needs to sharpen up a little which will come in time. It’s going to take time to adapt to the prem but he’s a big unit and for me and looks like he needs plenty of games to get up to speed. Shows how good he is most of the time but once he’s up to prem pace he’ll be fantastic.

Cos the PL decided not to use VAR for that. The pen was retaken because Rice had encroached and then cleared the rebound. If he hadn't cleared the rebound, or Sergio had scored, the pen would not have been retaken

Thought that another new rule meant you could not score of the rebound on a pen - you either score first time or its a goal kick?
