West Ham Thread 2013/14

Feel so sorry for the Hammers fans. They deserve better than Fat Sam. Why have they set their sights so low. They can use the new stadium as a catalyst to bring more investment like we did. Surely the lesson that has been learned in the last few years is that when you charge high ticket prices you have to provide entertainment on the field. They could pull in at least 10,000 more fans in the new stadium (45,000 plus gates) but people will not flock to see Fat Sam's football. He, like Moyes, is a dinosoar. The West Ham board have bottled the decision. FFS they would have been better bringing in Sven (he did a great job for us)

I dislike Fat Sam, but as soon as you try playing football in the bottom half of the table without a good foundation or a good investment then you start toying with relegation.

>It worked for West Brom, then they dropped like a stone
>It worked for Swansea, then the lack of investment/squad depth intervened and they fell to dangerous levels
>It didn't work for Blackpool or Palace under Holloway when he tried to become a tactical master
>Villa have tried it with youngsters, nearly turned to relegation twice over
>Martinez managed it for about 7 weeks of the season with Wigan, then finally it came crashing down

Southampton are the only 'lower league' team to successfully do it, because they had a good foundation set of players and invested cleverly.

If Fat Sam started toying with tactics he clearly isn't good with, he will see them relegated.
If West Ham want to bring in a Pochettino style manager, they will need some considerable investment in that squad to be capable of it and to not end up scrapping at the foot of the table.
He did what was necessary to keep West Ham above the level they could have been these last two seasons. I don't like him, but there is a place in football for him and his style of football clearly.

I hear what you're saying but in my opinion they're keeping him on to guarantee going into their new ground still in The Premiership. This will be his last season though.

Apparently everything will be ok, because they have a new attacking coach. Hammers fan (who was not 'appy AT AWWLLL)
on TSport said "What's he going to do, teach Carroll to head it better".

Im a happy hammer mate... Big Sam rescued us from being a Leeds, Birmingham, Charlton etc ... He took over the shambles from Avram with a depleted squad, got us promoted .. following season we finished top 10 ( no one moaning about entertainment or style that season) and this season we finished 13th and reached a semi final with a horrid season full of injuries. I can not thank him enough and he has been brilliant for us, i agree that a lot of our games this season have been dier to watch but surely no more than watching Fulham, Cardiff, Norwich, West brom, Swansea this season, or ask the Geordies how they've enjoyed there style of play this season. Spurs mate of mine says its been the worst season to watch for him. the whole Sam plays boring hoofball football is a complete myth and its a tag the media are not going to let go off. We've had it far worse over the years, Avram/Zola both tried playing 'the right way' attacking teams and we were losing every week, Pardew had one good season for us and Curbishly before him was worse to watch than it is now.

Im glad hes staying, he will keep us in the prem certainly until the Olympic Stadium on a limited budget. Not many managers can progress this squad any higher than he can.

Ok you watch them more than me so I respect your view. But only time will tell if this has been the right decision by your club. For what it's worth I went to all our games against Fulham, Cardiff, Norwich, West Brom, and Swansea this season and I believe they are all better to watch than the current West Ham team (accepting three of them went down!) I think the move to the new stadium is crucial for you and will shape your future for decades. But it is a time to be bold.
Just having an ambition of staying up is not enough. When we moved we appointed Keegan and filled the new stadium..albeit while flirting with relegation. Pearce and his lump ball style was a disaster for us. I just think West Ham, with a new stadium, can attract a much better manager than Fat Sam. Sam has reduced attendances everywhere he has worked. He is a throw back to the past and West Ham need to move forwards. Either way I wish you well and hope you make progress.

Sam's done a great job and should be allowed to do it unhindered, if the owners meddle with his strategy it'll backfire, and whilst sadly it would be Sam getting the bullet and the criticism it will be the owners fault.

i think Gary Neville made the pertinent point that owners have ideas above their station so to speak, and in modern football, with the way the elite clubs have it structured, owners of mid-table clubs have to accept that unless they really invest hard and pull in lucrative deals, that staying in the prem is the goal every season, and managers who achieve that should be respected a lot more.

Let's face it Palace would be down if it wasn't for Pulis, for the sake of their long term future he has done a remarkable job, one that, with their recent financial history, is nearly, if not as, important or meaningful to the club as winning a trophy.

Poorly run clubs go down, it's all about how clubs are run these days, you can't get away with a circus anymore. 10 years ago United could have had that transition, and really poor season (ie. Djemba-Djemba/Kleberson/Forlan era) yet still finish top 4, this season they finished 7th. You can't get away with poor management anymore.
