JA is worth a look he's middle ground in dark fantasy. Always found King to be more of a horror/thriller writer no matter what he did and I'm not a huge fan of the genre in literature tbh although I've always loved his books. I'll check it out.Sorry I'm not aware of Joe Abercrombies work so I can't compare but there's definitely King influence, unsurprisingly. I have to add at this point that this is the first book of his I've read so I may be a little unfair on him. I've got 2 other books of his to read at some point Heart Shaped Box & The Fireman (his latest) so after reading them his own identity may come through more. I'd be happy to recommend him from what I've read so far though.
