Is 'the secret footballer' worth a read?

No - I got bought it for Christmas, and it's shite.
As It Happens, by Jimmy Savile, and The White Guard, by Mikhail Bulgakov.

Seconded, also, the Master and Margherita by Bulgakov is a fantastic novel.

Nostromo, by Joseph Conrad, is highly recommended.

Biography of billionaire Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

Great value at Poundland for a quid.....

It is good but I found it hard to have sympathy with her. Would love to know what you reckon to it.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Complete rubbish. Now on the latest Rebus.

That's why I liked it. I didn't want to have sympathy as such, I just wanted a 'real' up to date account. And I thought it delivered that, all told. She and the victim sound like a nightmare couple but she was incredibly brave at the end and welcomed the noose.

Well yes. I felt really sorry for her son. She didn't seem to care less about him, it was all David.

There's a really good one about the Yorkshire Ripper with lots of interviews from his family and friends. I think it's called Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son.

Hi Hez
Yeah, read that a few years back.
Read a new book, only last year, about the case but told from the Police view. Sorry I can't remember the title now but it was excellent. Took me back to the 70's and really brought home both the failings of the Police and the sheer manpower involved to chase every lead.

I'm half way through 'Two Brothers' by Ben Elton.

Set in Germany during the rise of the nazis, it has few of the laughs normally found in his excellent work. In fact it's a chilling insight into what life was like for Jewish citizens at the start of hitlers twisted persecution of them.

how are you finding this? clearing out my attic ahead of moving house and found most of ben elton's books but not read this one. have been meaning too. obviously don't expect it to be hilarious but love his style.

Currently reading David Foster Wallace's "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men". It contains my favourite short story of all time, "The Depressed Person", which is both funny and truly sad at the same time.

Anyone who has a love of language and how precise it can be should give this feller a read. He can be a bit like marmite though, either love his stuff or hate it.

Great shout.
An incredibly gifted and intense writer who succumbed to his awful affliction far too soon.
Infinite Jest is a wonderful novel.
