What Causes Autism?

I don't think it's becoming more common, I think it's just more recognised now. A kid growing up in the 80's would have just been labelled as a bit quiet, not very sociable whereas now that same kid will be diagnosed as on the spectrum.

Same reason you didn't see any metatarsal injuries in football in the 70's, it was just called a broken toe.

So basically, we all have autism in some form.

Let us not forget that people often blame Autism for the accompanying mental difference. It is not the case in a lot of cases.

I think everyone is on the spectrum in some form.
Although I'm always wary of people self diagnosing themselves with certain conditions.

I know as a kid I used to like to line up my toy cars, wasn't very sociable and have always been good with numbers and logical things.
These are all things that, recently I've seen as examples of signs of autism, but wouldn't really like to self diagnose myself as autistic.

That's just a small part of a very complicated triage of situations. To be considered autistic you must have issues with communication, socialisation and certain repetitive behaviours consistently and over a long enough period of time. All kids have issues with all of these at one point or another to one degree or another but to have a diagnosis of autism you need to have problems with all three parts.

"there will be more children diagnosed with autism this year then diabetes, cancer etc put together"

You said asthma though.

And by back it up, I meant some actual empirical stats rather than a video I'm definitely not going to sit through for 22 minutes.

That's what I meant about self-diagnosis, it's easy to see certain symptons in yourself.
It's the same with depression. I've got friends diagnosed with clinical depression, and when you're feeling a bit down yourself it's easy to think, "yeah I must have that as well", when in reality you've probably got no idea.

The doctor and I use the word grudgingly who made the connection to the MMR vaccine was eventually struck off the medical register. The science he applied to arrive at his conclusions were significantly flawed and these conclusions panicked thousands of parents into not vaccinating their children. many of these suffered serious illness as a consequence and possibly the high cost of litigation in the USA where he had legged it to put of parents from suing the idiot.
