What does it take to be considered a real City fan?

It’s pretty common to see posters questioning whether someone is a real City fan or not, but it’s a pointless debate unless everyone has the same understanding of what being a real City fan actually means. Not that we’re ever likely to come to a consensus, but just out of interest to see the range of opinions, what’s your definition? (it's trickier than you might expect, when you try to spell it out)

For me, the simplest definition is someone who would want City to win in any game we could possibly play. You might like City a lot, but if you have stronger feelings for another team, then I don't think you can call yourself a real City fan (this seems a bit harsh if you follow City as well as, say, a lower division team, but I can't think of any way around it - if the two teams played and you didn't want City to win, it's hard to consider yourself a real City fan). I don’t think it matters where you were born, or how many games you’ve been to, how many generations of your family have supported them, or how long you’ve supported them. If City are your number one team now, you’re a real City fan in my opinion.
Number one? Honestly, number fuckin one?
Forty two years and its never even crossed my mind to take in a two, three or four.

Is a bit baffling that Number 1 team now thing..... I either hate or don't hate every other team, I certainly don't have any 2nd or 3rd teams.

You don't find yourself pulling for a particular Italian team, or Spanish team when you watch their league games? You don't have fond feelings towards a lower division team (Brentford last year, or Wigan this year, perhaps)? I'd say you could still be a real City fan if you did, but I suppose your response suggests you have a different definition of what it takes to be a real City fan, which is, after all, what the thread's about - viva la difference!

Nope. Just city I'm afraid. They take ever ounce of emotion in me. No room for 2nd teams and shit.

you need to have been at Anfield the last time we were battling it out with them like this

not even being born until after 1977 is not an acceptable excuse ;-)

City take up enough of my time and emotional strain. There's no room for anyone else. Some clubs I don't dislike as much as others; that's about as far as it goes.

I think I'd prefer to be known as a "plastic" than a "real fan". Less of the smug superiority.

For me its simple. If you ever meet anyone called Helen and you automatically start to reminisce about a lady with a bell then you are blue through and through.

If I ever meet Helen Flannagan I don't think I will be thinking about an old lady with a bell.

I'll be thinking about my bell.
