What has the UK become?

I fear this too. The only way out of the hole is dynamic sconomic growth and we do not have the building blocks for this nor any real prospect of them. Any new government can only really apply sticking plasters. Throw in a housing crash and a dumb electorate and we could have an even harder right wing government in 5 years.
That is a really grim thought.

That looks like the reflexive response of numerous places. However, it’s not economics that will create it, it will be the post-economic fallout that blames “other” for one’s own difficult circumstances. Throw in highly magnified crime BY “other” and the narrative writes itself.

That said, in a democracy, numbers matter and the increasing number of “other” creates fear and reaction.

Not sure where it ends, but liberal policies seem totally ineffective at addressing the fears being created, which will create a vacuum to be exploited.

And here we sit…the economic malaise is all around us and the blue touch paper has been lit…

There is a problem in the West in general, we have highest standard of living and people want to have the same, the economic disparity is huge, most of the world don’t have access to a telephone line or indoor plumbing, we have more food than we know what to do with, and live lives of comfort

Do we build ever bigger walls ? Or do we really start to tackle the problems, I suspect that we will go for bigger walls as it’s the easiest option
