What has the UK become?

I think in many ways it is still a great country to live, just not as good as it was a decade ago.
Don't agree it is great. It depends really on each individual circumstances. I think it has bombed in the last ten years and hasn't reached the bottom yet. Its far more difficult to feel proud to be British thats for sure. Our support for Ukraine is a high point in a pretty bleak picture.

Love the countryside, villages, pubs, nightlife, sense of humour, London, our amazing language and City. Plenty about this country is still great.

Agree with most of that. How you feel depends on a balance of that with current politics, the cost of living crisis, the wilful destruction of the NHS and Social care, the aftermath of the pandemic, the poisonous media ….
I have to confess that latter are all weighing me down more than they probably should be.

The majority is great with people being the mainstay. It’s the minority few who rule and divide this country for their own aim that are the issue and I’d suggest that if we had a change of government now, a huge cloud would be lifted.

Having to wait up to 2 years is just going to make people even more frustrated, with a slow decline in morale leading to further anger down the line.

Looking back, if you weren’t greedy, the last Labour government did give people a real good feel factor to the country.

Cheer up Citizens!

It could be far worse - you could live in the USA!
Don’t believe the hype on this forum about how bad Britain is. This country is bloody brilliant, I love living here and wouldn’t even think of living anywhere else.

Yeah there’s a handful of shit things, a minority of cunts and it could be better… a lot better! But day-to-day none of them have much impact on my life whatsoever. The few that do are maybe the shit roads and the litter/graffiti but they’re mainly Manchester problems because the roads and litter/graffiti situation in other places in this country are miles better. Oh, and the media (especially the sports media), they’re all cunts.

But other than that, the people I surround myself with, the people I listen to, the people I respect, the people who really have an impact on my life, the things I do in my spare time, the sport, the music, gigs, pubs, clubs, fashion, the weather (yes, I love the changeable weather and seasons), the countryside, the seaside, our cities, our villages, our history and historic sites, the food (yes, honestly, the food!), the low crime (especially murder) rate, our traditions, our humour, our stoicism, manners, helpfulness, kindness from - to reiterate - the fantastic people… all make this country great.

This miserable country hating bollocks from a minority of our own citizens is an embarrassment to be honest. Miserable people speak volumes about themselves, not about the country they live in. People who constantly pay attention to the wrong things, things they place importance on when they aren’t important, picking out negatives, dwelling on the negatives, are all part of their own problem with the country.

The only things that really matter are health and laughter.

Good post that Mr C

It is a peculiar right wing thing to blame leftists like me for hating this country because I take issue with their version of what this country is or ought to be.

Where the RW think that displaying a union flag is a sign of patriotism, I see it as a sign of insecurity as to what our country is. I am comfortable with my love of country, I do not need to fly a flag to prove it.

When you get idiot RWs wanting the National Anthem sang in schools every morning because it would make our kids love our country more, I see it as a form of jingoistic brainwashing that would take up time better spent on teaching kids how to be critical thinkers who can decide for themselves.

Orwell wrote during WW2

‘England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In Left-wing circles it is always felt there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every British institution.’

Orwell is of course right here in my opinion, but contextually I take it as the intellectual left snigger at the absurdities of British institutions such as the Monarchy, the House of Lords and public schools. There is also the Left wing stance of anti colonialism to consider here in terms of being ashamed of ones own nationality. Britain being the foremost colonial exploiter of other countries the world has ever known.

Then of course you have the Brexit debate, many Pro-Brexiteers accused Pro Remain of hating the UK. The remain argument that leaving the EU would leave the UK as a small insignificant island of the coast of an economic superpower was interpreted as meaning those who wished to remain hated the UK and only those who wanted to leave were true believers in the greatness of Britain.

We also have the ludicrous rise of woke. 50p Lee believes the next election should be fought on a culture war front, this I would argue means its the right who hate Britain, not the left.
It is Right-wing contempt for our justice system, which, like our health service, was once considered to be the envy of the world, has escalated during the post-EU referendum years. In November 2016, the Daily Mail promoted antagonistic rhetoric on its front page. ‘Enemies of the People, fury over ‘out of touch’ judges who defied 17.4m Brexit voters and could trigger constitutional crisis,’ read the headline. In 2021, concerned that the Judicial Review and Courts Bill could be used to quash public dissent against the actions of the government, and undermine the rule of law. At the same time, the then prime minister and his home secretary demeaned lawyers as “lefties” who act “against the public interest.”

The National Trust, another emblem of Britain’s unique heritage, has been the target of a right-wing infiltration. For several years , an insurgent group has been waging a political campaign against perceived ‘wokeness’ within the National Trust. Fortunately, the insurgents have yet to have any success, and have achieved little more than make themselves look pathetic cunts.

But it is the NHS that is perhaps the biggest victim of right-wing animosity at sources of national pride. 12 years of shite funding have run the health service into the ground. Yet still we have a prime minister who, not only refuses to negotiate with nurses on pay to avert strikes, but also refuses to rule out NHS staff getting sacked in his strike crackdown.

The real question is why do the right-wing hate everything that is good about Britain?

A cesspit filled with idle idiots, ran by corrupt horrible bastards.

36 million take more from the state than they put in which says enough.

I do like pub lunches, the peak district and some of our service stations though.

The problems are political.

Specifically sections of those who wield power have better understood how to use both conventional and social media to advance their own agendas. From the obvious scaremongering in the news to the harvesting of data and more subtle targeting of content online.

And that's it, it's about manipulating the public. As a result we see the destruction of things that benefit the majority, being replaced by things that benefit the rich and powerful. We are slowly having our rights and freedoms eaten away at, by the people who want the ability to manipulate and exploit us even more.

Objectively the country is still a good place to live, with many great advantages. But the trend is decline, we have to recognise that in order to fight against it.
