What is ... Britishness?

Britishness really does not exist these days due to our over Americanised culture delivered to us from MTV. Kids wanna be gangstas yo!

Of course Britishness still exists.

Perhaps not to our generation but certainly to many of the generation that preceded us.

Well, at least SOME of you are getting the point of what I'm asking. I'm not interested in overt social commentary. I'm asking about YOUR 'Britishness' and its relation to the country.

Talking about knife crime isn't your Brit identity, is it? It may be what you see, but not defines you.

Thinking about it... Is what you see an underlying definition or a momentary feeling?

Whatever happened to the "bowler hat/ umbrella/ cup of tea" definition??!!

It never actually existed as a true representation of British culture.

To answer your initial question: for me, being British [or actually English] is something i can't define. I'm just me and although a massive part of this is a result of where i've lived within England...it's just who i am and it can't be explained or defined by it.

A 'Britishness' is clearly different from an 'Englishness', so what makes us a "United Kingdom", if we're all seperated off?

And it IS interesting to read our foreign take on what defines us! Even if they may be ex-pats.

And that was my point exactly mate.So many different cultures in our country today,it's difficult to pin-point exactly what is British, as i'm sure, many people have their own idea in this wonderful,diverse, country of ours.

Dunno...probably that we are still a few countries that make up a bigger one: Britain. But other than that, not much other than a similarity in cultures, laws and traditions.

I thought it was a fair point. Young people never walked down the street grabbing their crotches and shouting hee hee but young lads today and back in the olden days like you walked around like they were some sort of urban gangster.

Funny thing I find nowadays is that the white kids that act 'ghetto' and love their rap are extremely racist. They can't understand that there lives are being shaped by mostly uneducated street slime from the U.S.
