What Year Did You First Use Internet?

My first taste of the internet was around 2001 in work.

Although i was part of the school computer team (or geeks as we were known then) that sent the schools first email back in 1993. We sat around the schools one decent PC and we sent an email to another comprehensive school around 20 miles away. It took them 3 hours to reply but it was an amazing experience back then! :-)

so can anyone beat 1988?

Maybe I can equal it. I don't know. 1988 was my first year at university and I remember, with a tutor, using one of the 'computer labs' computers to access dissertations that had been done at American universities. It was explained to me at the time that the computer I was using was 'talking' to the one over there. Was that the internet?

We also used the same computers to leave messages for each other - a kind of forerunner to email

EDIT: Just actually bothered to read the whole topic! Sounds like it was the same JANET system you referred to a few pages back!
