When can I officially be concerned?

Back to Hughes, remember we beat Chelsea to the punch for him, so he was on the radar, he hauled Blackburn into Europe and consistently got Blackburn to finish higher than us. He has international experience and got the best out of a poor team.

Who was it that leaked the story that Chelsea were after Hughes. Not Ian Ladyman by any chance? As for hauling Blackburn into Europe, they had qualified for Europe in the two seasons before he joined them. Just pointing that out in the interests of accuracy mind.

Liverpool have won a European Cup, made another final and won an FA Cup in that time I think.

making a final isn't winning and to be fair when thay won it, is was more Milan's complency than tactical genius of Benitez, when they concentrated Milan, pounded them.
An FA Cup is not a great return for a club of that stature, is brings them level with Portsmouth.

I realise City haven't done anything like that for 30 years, but in re enforced my point, that i feel sometimes we elevate our standing in the game to over optimistic levels.

I am neither saying we shouldn't aim for those positions, but we will have setbacks, when we are close, we need to prepare for them. Everyone has the teething problems.

Mark Bowen did comfirm this when Scolari was saying he was offered the City Job before Hughes.

What is more worrying about Hughes is the fact that in a season and a half, have we ever come from behind to win a game? That alone suggests he doesn't have the tactical mind or man management skills to turn things around in a single game, let alone a season which already seems to be running away from him. Prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt for now, but blind loyalty to the man is just as much a knee-jerk reaction as wanting him out

Well,if you're going to pick him up on some points, I might as well join in!

Spurs weren't a failing team? He took over with 2 points from 9 games, Hughes had a start of about a dozen points on him, yet he overtook us by the end of the season... and that was without "his" players as he couldn't buy anyonme till the January window.

Who ever claimed Hughes almost got the Chelsea job? His agent? Chelsea never once suggested that was the case.

Did a great job at Blackburn? Was it any better than the job Allardyce did at Bolton? I doubt it. And would we have Allardyce as our manager? Not a fucking chance! Big Fat Sam went to a big club (Newcstle) and couldn't cut it... similarities?

I really do admire your faith. Honest I do.

But every top club in this country has only appointed someone with a track record of achievement, we are the only one that has taken a gamble on untried and inexperienced. Apart from Everton... and they're calling for his head just about every season and they haven't got a pot to piss in either!

If we nonchalantly accept that some players aren't good enough and we move them on, why are we so reluctant to see the same with a management and coaching team?

He joined just after the start of 2004 season, they certainly weren't in Europe then, which brings me back to what i said, he hauled Blackburn back into Europe.

And no, many people reported it

I have always said Hughes out from day 1

Incorrect. Judgements are in fact made prior to day 1 in that there are a lot of managers (Hughes included) who I would not have offered the job in the first place. I would not employ Gary Megson, Souness or Roy Keane to quote but three and neither would many on here I suspect so if either of them turned up on day 1 I would be advocating their removal in favour of someone of a higher calibre.

Hughes is no different and 18 months later I have yet to see anything that alters my original assessment. Namely not good enough. You can suck on the teat of 'more time' and 'lets give les a chance' until it runs dry if you like and that is yours and many others prerogative but also bear in mind that many on here called out Frank for being a useless cock (and potless) to the dismay of the majority on here yet 12 months or so on we have Cook himself admitting that things were bad.

Cook himself was guilty of making comments over the Kaka affair which I said at the time were unprofessional only to get the happy brigade go into one about not backing the club and all that bollocks yet now Cook himself admits he was wrong to do so (and fair play to him for saying as such as I quite like Cookie).

Basically just because people have a low opinion of Hughes and god knows he does his best not to disapoint us and we voice that opinion does not make us disloyal, or rag obsessed or whatever the mot juste of the day is for 'Hughes Outers'. I will say though that you had better f**king pray to whatever god you worship that we are wrong about Hughes before he f**ks things up beyond all recognition.

OK, fair enough. I guess you'll agree then that Harry Redknapp hauled Tottenham back to respectability in a matter of weeks.

You're first link says that Hughes gave Chelsea a 48 hour deadline to make an approach (I guess they didn't).

The second link is a journo saying that he thinks someone like Hughes should get the job.

The third is from a year earlier, Chelsea have had four managers since so he obviously wasn't that high on the list.

I'll give you the fourth link, but to be honest I reckon all the talk about Hughes going to Chelsea originated from the man himself (or agents etc). Especially the deadline articles just screamed of a "you better get me quick City, otherwise I might go elsewhere". Could be wrong though, I'm sure it'll happen one day.

Yes the Hughes gives Chelsea ultimatum was my fave :)

Kenyon did float the Hughes idea however Roman was never at the races with that one. Basically if Roman had wanted Hughes then Hughes would have gone to Chelsea. He didn't which tells its own story.

Which was lucky for Hughes as he would have been canned after 6 months
