Which away grounds are the unfriendliest to visit?

To be honest nearly every away game in the late 70's and eighties no matter where, if you were unlucky and took a couple of wrong turns there would always be people waiting to have a go.

Although i never got into any mither there, for me the most intimidating was Millwall (old den).

First time i went i was relieved to get in the ground only to be shocked to find that u shared the same bogs with their fans.

Anyone remember going there for a cup replay? We drew again and they tossed coin and we lost so we went there again about three days later.

From a Everton perspective trips to Manchester were always hairy, loved Maine Road as a ground but a few times it was chaos after the match. Man Utd was always the worst though, got a kicking in Manc city centre one year from a few united. All the bullshit about our 'friendly derby' with the kopites makes me laugh, our games in the 1980s were battlegrounds after the game.

It's all but gone from the game now, only trouble I've seen is at Hull City, seemed to be loads waiting for trouble after the game.

Four more really bad ones were ...

Nottm Forest (a) FA Cup , 1974 Sunday game ...... we lost 1-4 , and Duncan McKenzie got a hat trick i think ...... loads of trouble both inside and outside of the ground.

Newcastle (a) FA Cup , 1977 ...... we won 3-1 , Gary Owen got one of the goals ....... fighting in the ground , and in the streets outside.

Man United (a)1974 .. Denis Law backheel goal , City won 1-0 ....... pitch invasion from the rags , kicked off bigstyle in the scoreboard paddock ...... the ONLY time i've ever seriously encountered trouble at Old Trafford.

Leeds (a) League , 1975 ...... 2-2 draw , Donachie equalised for us right at the end ....... absolute murder outside after the game , you took your life in your hands getting back to the station ........ loads of people on the City train were injured in one way or another , coppers practically non-existent outside ground .... probably THE worst day i've ever faced as a City fan.

Remember both of those, the Newcastle game was 77 I think tho, we won at Leeds in the previous round, pitch invasion, very lively outside after the game.
Can remember hearing the draw for the next round, sure it was done on the Saturday after the games back then, anyway it was on to Newcastle and as you say a 3-1 win.

Both these games were played out in volatile atmospheres, I would say we had somewhere around 12,000 fans at each game but a good % of blues were run out of the ground @ St James Pk before half time.

The link is to a news clipping after the Leeds match, unsure how to put it in the post, hope it works.....

<a class="postlink" href="http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59/steakandsidney/leedsvcity2.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59 ... vcity2.jpg</a>

This one is from the same game, I think big Joe was wishing he ahdn't done that 2 minutes later as the Gelderd end emptied onto the pitch from behind him. There a was a little trend going at the time of trying to get games stopped when losing. the ref was having non of it and announced that even if it took til midnight this game was going to finish no matter what,

<a class="postlink" href="http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59/steakandsidney/leedsvcity3.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59 ... vcity3.jpg</a>

The first time I remember it happening was circa 74, it was Newcastle at home to Forest, the geordies took to the pitch when they were losing the game, I think it was abandoned and the replay was @ the City Ground, memory fades.

edited due to link duplication.

My mistake earlier, it was 78, heres a bit of the game for those interested

Some decent posts in this thread, nothing wrong with reminiscing, I for one am glad that I was able to experience the game in the 70's, made some fantastic memories, some shit days too, wouldn't swap any of it.

Throughout the 80's imo Goodison were thee only other gaff on par with our beloved Maine Road in so many ways. Our worse were coming off Slime street the night match 88 league cup quarters and being on the back foot due to amount of metalics pulled and used by yuse lot between St. Johns precinct and yankee bar.

Joint 2nd were the Den and Ayresome Park.

3rd Elland Road

4th Roker Park late 70's-early 80's when they had no segregation.

Anyone here who was there when this happend?

I was there then. It was my first ever derby game. I was 7! I remember that but of the game clearly. Notice the Rags didn't do it in the Kippax, they, in their true style, triedto shientheir power where they knew it wouldn't kick off too much for them.

Good shout re Sunderland, that big open end was lively from start to finish, also the walk from Seaburn station, can recall going on the special once, there were less than 50 on it, it seemed as thought the whole town had turned out to welcome us.

You could cop it anywhere bitd if you didn't have your wits about you but certain aways were adrenalin filled from the moment you set off, merseyside mainly because of the perception that everyone of them carried, plenty of them did, nearest I came to getting a stripe was the 81 qf @ Goodison, inches from my face, no need for all that imo, never had time for blade carriers.

St Andrews is one I would add to your list of 4, never easy going there, again no segragation in that end terrace.
