I don't know how to read it, because I feel pretty strongly that way. Also never more so than with Jesus... he looks tonnes stronger and meaner than I expected.
I hope Pep is playing it this way to show every player that a place in the squad is something you need to fight for. It might also sway the decision of someone who might prefer to coast for another year before taking a move.
Sure, if one of those three really needs to leave for personal reasons, then that might be something we should accept.
But ideally? No. Not a chance. The individuals I would be happy to leave are Ake, Cancelo, Mendy. Two of them, with one replacement LB or a RB/DM.
And.. Mahrez, or Sterling. Sorry. Mahrez is tougher than I feared, but is still blowing hot and cold ....and there's something else that bugs me that I won't go into.
More likely tho, I'd lose Sterling. England hero. Massive performer in the past. But he is the guy who wants it all his way, and he has been at the centre of a lot of disappointments for us. He is not at all a young man any more, but is at times not acting or performing like I would want from a senior figure. Tactically, with Grealish, I don't get why we need him any more. Get Kane in and the goals flow from CF.
The other option is giving someone Torres. Which I would be ok with. He may turn into a 70m+ striker, but a neat control and finish here and there doesn't cut it for me. It very much would depend on what the coaching staff think about his likely progression in the CF role. Silly thing is, we still lack goalscorers, we really do.
But Gabby looks like a physical menace now. All I can say is, yikes. He will destroy many a team for many a years. Bernie is Bernie, good in the areas we lack depth. The two are the epitome of how to win the ball back. And that is still so very important.
And Laporte is quality, and suited to our game. The risk of losing him, and relying on Ake, would be ameliorated by Walker's presence, but still. I do think however Pau Torres or another might be a readily available replacement.
For me, I hope the club have been keeping their cards appropriately close to their chest, and engineering a crunch time w/r/t player management. Because just to let two of those three walk, whilst keeping all the other lesser performers and characters would be very disappointing, and very likely leave us with a seriously unbalanced squad, with many other good options for us at much smaller clubs.
Cmon City. Pull this one out of the fire.
