Who and what’s to blame?

I see parallels between our attempt to retain the title with the attempt in 2012/13.

On both occasions we had won the league the previous season in the most mentally draining and euphoric circumstances. 2011/12 is the most special of title wins because of the way it happened on the last day, in the last minute. But the weeks leading up to it where we overturned an eight point gap with six games to go and beat United on the Monday night to take the driver's seat. That was incredible. 2018/19 was different in the sense that Liverpool did not bottle the league. We were always ahead. But just. Last season was a tug of war battle in which neither of us were giving up an inch and in the end we just about held on the longest.

The mental stamina to get through these campaigns saw us follow up with complacency and a sense of what next to do. We stood still and started the season off on auto-pilot but when the first sense of trouble came we fell apart. Injuries, poor defending, players getting older and less motivated, and some bad luck on decisions but ultimately a sense that everything was going right for our challenger and feeling sorry for ourselves. United in 2012/13 scored so many late goals and Liverpool too were hardly wiping the floor with teams but instead grinding them out. It's dispiriting to see that happen and our club and our fanbase haven't been on the other end of that for a couple of years. By Christmas of 2012 just like Christmas of 2013 we'd gifted them a lead at the top that we could never claw back.

The optimistic thing is in 2013/14 we regained the title with a new sense of rigour. Obviously it was with a new manager which is something I don't want to happen now. I want Pep to stay for years to come. But I want him to also lead the club off the field with a bit less of a chip on his shoulder crying about spoilt milk. The club in general as OP put it has a habit of not letting things go and dwelling on it. An us vs them mentality is needed of course. But we've got to learn to show the arrogance we always show when times are good when they are not so good too. We've lost too many games this season by not being to lift ourselves when the opposition peg us back.

1. A decent centre half needed. Fern into midfield until his legs go.
2. If your playing Sterling, on the right, not the left.
3. Sorry, but no more David Silva.
4. I like Gundo, but not in our team.
5. Have a bit of faith in the kids. We may lose a few games but you get little experience from a 2 minute cameo or 60 minutes against a fourth tier club in the cup.
6. Left back, will we ever find a decent one? Mendy would be fantastic firing balls in for a 6 foot striker but not Aguero or Jesus.

These matches post restart should have been an opportunity to try players/systems ready for the CL and next season. 3 games in, we haven't learnt anything we dont already know.

Garcia? There's still time for him to make a strong claim this season.

He could be one of the 4, along with Laporte. Still leaves 2 needed. I had always had high hopes for Stones but his injuries seem to stop him really getting into form.

I dont post much when it comes to tactics etc as I know I dont have anything to contribute but to me the thing we have been lacking is directness in forward play and being hesitant to shoot. Look at how we play when Phil is on the pitch. He forces others to up the tempo and he isnt afraid to shoot from anywhere.

Sterling did not score the amount of goals we expected.
the lack of replacement for Kompany was big loss.

roll on next year. congrats scousers

The departure of Kompany was huge. Not just for his performances of the pitch - he was a leader. Such players are not two a penny. Not replaced at all. Follow that with the loss (for much of our season) of our one undoubtedly excellent central defender. Too much to paper over a crack that big.

Apart from that, too many players not quite "there".

I would now like to see some of our younger players given a chance in the League, to give them experience and show whether or not they are good enough.

Next priority FA Cup. Then the Champs League, which we might just win, given a bit of fortune. You never know.

Nothing is to blame, Liverpool are just a better team right now. It's really that simple.

We're coming to the end of a 3-4 year cycle which will see our established old guard in Kompany, Fernandinho, Silva and Aguero leaving to be slowly replaced by Ederson, Laporte, Bernardo, De Bruyne and Sterling. We just need to be patient and let those players slowly establish themselves as the new leadership team and move on.

Liverpool's front three, Alison, VVD, Matip, Robertson, Fabinho, Chamberlain, Henderson, Shaqiri, Wijnaldum are all 27-30, they've bought players who have all come into the peak of their careers together and are seeing the benefits. It won't last, because it can't, in 2-3 years time they'll have to start replacing a lot of players over a short period of time. The younger players in the squad are Trent AA and Joe Gomez, some young lad with a stupid haircut whose name escapes me and that's it.

Lot of interesting points here.
This season a critical point was mid Nov when LiVARpool were 6 clear and we came from behind to beat Saints and they were losing 1-0 away to Villa. We then all know what happened a week later at Anfield despite us playing well. So instead of the gap being 3 orless points it was up to 9 andI think it was then we knew the writing was on the wall.

A surprising feature had been the loss of form of players we used to rely on. It’s for various reasons but a few weren’t as good as they were the season before
Bernardo
Ederson
David Silvawill
Gundog
Stones
Raheem lost form from Nov onwards

Add world class players out in Laporte and Sane

Next 2-3 years will have some rebuilding so that no we need to have realistic ambitions. We should be up there but will take s lot to knock Liverpool off where they are.

Can’t afford very many mistakes in transfers now
