Who is our best centre back? last 30 years

While I wouldn't suggest he was the best I think Ged Wiekens deserves a mention for his consistently solid form as we climbed back to the top flight - and also for that vital goal at Wrexham and his performance in the last Maine Rd derby.

I too would go back to the mid - late 70's I'm going for Big Dave Watson what a legend doggedly determined in his resolve, evilly hard and the most frightening prospect to opposition strikers of the era he feared no-one.

Don't remember us ever having a centre half called Van Boyten

I do remember a Daniel Van Buyten though
He was the "Stephen Jordan" of the centre half world
Brilliant against united, pretty rubbish against everyone else
Remember the sending off vs Leeds! He was 20 yards behind the rest of our defensive line, playing everyone onside and hauled back Alan Smith

How Fvcking dare you use facts and worst of all the Truth to destroy the BM myth that DVB was the worlds best ever Centre Back

100% right by the way

Dave Watson by a country mile BTW

Incredibly no one has mentioned Keith Curle. That first season he was absolutely outstanding for us and although I would not say the best, he would definitely be in the top five along with Distin, Kompany, Dunne and Lescott.

Van Buyten and Hendry proved they were outstanding centre halfs, but mainly elsewhere. Van buyten in particular played about 6 games and was partly culpable for losing at liverpool (I think) and Leeds. If we picked a player on that premise Boateng would have to make the top five.

Keith Curle was a Rolls Royce of a footballer. So fast and assured on the ball. If he'd been better in the air he'd have been truly world-class.
