I'd say its the rocks for brains that actually made him the player he was.Gascoigne, without a shadow of doubt. The talent he had was off the scale just a shame he had rocks where his brain should be.
I`d turn the tv on just to watch him play the beautiful game.
Have heard old time blues insist Edwards’s was destined to be the best player of his generation. Same with Peter Doherty being City’s best ever player. Difficult to judge fairly across generations and so many players lost prime years like Doherty and Matthews. Best I have seen would be between Keegan who made the best of his ability and Gascogne. Rooney in his first tournament was frightening but never really hit those heights often enough to stay in the debate. We'll never know what he would have become, but everyone who saw him play, including knowledgeable City fans at the time, would have put Duncan Edwards in this conversation. By all accounts, at eighteen, he already played like a twenty-five year old. Oh, and also by all accounts, he could play literally any position (except keeper).
My stepfather (who trialled for London Boys) saw those lads. Denis Viollet was the one he always raved about.
