Surprised Sir Jimmy Savile hasn't already been mentioned. The thankless work he did for charity is commendable.

I will crack open a cold one in his memory.Surprised Sir Jimmy Savile hasn't already been mentioned. The thankless work he did for charity is commendable.
Lots of good ! Tell that to the choir boys, the orphans, the Cathars. A storyteller whose stories were manipulated to make some select people very rich.Lots of good has come of him too
But as GDM points out, "greatest" needs defining if only for the purposes of this thread.
I am more inclined to adopt a 40 year old story than believe a story that says he was the son of God.Disagree about what? Wherever the truth lies about what he said or did, he’s impacted on human history more than pretty much anyone. That cannot be dismissed, irrespective of how his message has been manipulated and exploited since.
Great buildings have been built, territories conquered and wars fought in his name, but you’d rather adopt the story contained in a mildly amusing film from 40 odd years ago as…err… gospel?
Whatever the subsequent forces at work, his life, his message, has discernibly and hugely changed the course of human history. If that doesn’t make someone ‘great’, then I don’t know what does.
It was a cult that took off and has split into so many sub cults and still is splitting and fighting with each other about who’s interpretation of the message is right.Lots of good ! I fully accept we may have needed a ten commandments when there was no real laws or social mores but tell an Irish woman with 15 kids and a church that demands money you havent got each Sunday he was a great man.
Think we're at cross purposes.Lots of good ! Tell that to the choir boys, the orphans, the Cathars. A storyteller whose stories were manipulated to make some select people very rich.
