Who misses the football special?

Leeds was always an experience in the 70`s . Bricked at every bridge till Hebden Bridge . Never sit in a seat facing forward either ! Derby away also . By the time we reached the tunnels in the Peak District all available light bulbs and toilet rolls had already been jettisoned .

Staying with friends at Middleport prior to Stoke away in 1976. Waiting for the train to Stoke at Longport stations City Special passed a toilet was thrown from the train at us. Think we won 3 1 brilliant day.

I remember a midweek game in the League Cup I think, later 70s, there were only about 50 on the special and it was mayhem getting back to the station after the game. Also recall going to Sunderland on a Saturday and there were 34 on the special.
As others have said the specials were a great way to go when you're young and learning the routine, landing in other towns and making a racket as you leave the station. My first away on the special was Burnley, great day out.
I was on the Mid-week Luton train, we were attacked on the way back to the station, l got a right pasting and spent the night in hospital. There were a couple of other blues back there also and they said the ones who made it to the station were shot at with air rifles.

Stoke was also bad for bricking. Blinds down till well past Kidsgrove.
Anybody remember Blackburn away in a pre season tournament many many years ago ? We lost 1-0 at Blackpool on the Saturday and the special blues caused mayhem on way back to the station. Blackburn was on the Tuesday and I got a service train about 5pm, there was a waiting committee outside the station, but no trouble. Must have been 300 on the special, we lost 1-0, and no escort back to the station, it was mayhem everywhere. As I had no special ticket the police would nt let me back on it, and when it left there were about 100 blues left. The police sent for another train from Bolton, we left at 11pm, and after 100 yards we were bricked big style even the police on the train took cover.
Stoke was always a grin, one year, having lost as usual, the special was getting wrecked big time and we stopped at Cheadle Hulme to be all thrown off by the police. West Ham in a league cup replay was tasty , we drew 0-0 at Maine Road, from memory City took on the ICF outside the main stand after and gave them a run for their money.
There were nt too many on the special the following week for the replay, but just enough to make you feel somewhat safe.
There was an excuse for an escort from the station to the ground, but the police seemed to split up and West Ham moved across the road into us, was a bit hairy for a few moments !
In true typical style we won 2-1: Kinsey and Cunningham anybody ?
Thankfully the police kept us in and West Ham were lined across the road all way back to the station, singing Bubbles which we thought was the signal to charge, but nothing happened.
We were all tucked up safely on the train about to go when a guy in a suit ran towards the train threatening to do us all in, but the police grabbed him.
Brighton away when Bobby Mac scored was lively on the way back from the old Goldstone ground, and again Pompey was hair raising experience, the police must have kep us in for ages after and there were still plenty of them about looking for trouble.
Both Arsenal and Spuds away the special stopped at local stations to bot h grounds, I remember Arsenal trying to ambush us on the walk back. But City stood firm and the police chased them off.
Wolves was another dodgy experience, one midweek game they tried to ambush us near a roundabout on the way back, but they in turn were hit by the Cool Cats who appeared from nowhere and Wolves legged it. That night we were duly bricked having pulled out of Wolverhampton and one blue was badly injured.
All in all some hilarious days out, great memories.

No recollection of who scored the other goal but remember the game and Cunningham’s goal well. Think it may well have been his one and only goal for City.

Got bundled out of Woolworths ( in the days ) in Shrewsbury by about 50 or so of their lads and ran like the proverbial along the river with them in hot pursuit.....came face to face with 2 huge wrought iron gates and tried to get over just in time for the ' special ' to arrive....my heros.
The special to Norwich was always a memorable occasion aswell. Remember coming into a station and someone decided it would be fun to lob a fire extinguisher through a window as we were slowing down, it over took the train and narrowly missed some inocent bystanders

Newcastle away Keegan v Tolmie game, we lost 5-0, the train went to Manors station. Police escort to the ground was massive, yet skirmishes all around the City center until we got the ground. Kept back for ages, then as we walked back to the station, the police forced the pace so that we broke out into a jog back to the station.
Arsenal away, the special got into Euston at 3.15, got to the ground at half time, had to go through the turnstiles at the Arsenal end of the clock end, the police made a barrier at the top of the terrace to stop fans attacking each other. We were 1-0 down at the time and that was the final score
