Who was City's best ever goalie?

Frank Swift was the greatest ever goalie full stop according to everone who saw him play

BIG JOE in my time especially the way he knuckled down lost weight etc and became one of the best in England

I can remember fans throwing chip wrappers into the back of his net from the platt lane wooden seats

Harsh but fair at the time. Too be fair he sucked it up and decided he had to do better and did, you can't ask more than that.

In my time (1968) I think Coton just edges Corrigan, but I think Hart could well eclipse both of them.

Big Joe in my time. I met Steve Fleet a couple of times and he was i believe a decent goalie though having Bert around limited his appearances to 5 or 6 in as many years. We have been blessed with some fantastic keepers over a long period.

Big Joe for me. Hart will give him a run for his money and I have to mention Bobby Mac against Watfords performance.

Well there's plenty to choose from:-

Big Frank Swift

Bert Trautmann

Harry Dowd/Ken Mulhearn/Alan Ogley

Big Joe Corrigan

Tony Coton

The great Dane (Snr)

David Seaman

Shay Given/Joe Hart.

Or maybe someone else??

My Grandad (never met him, he died in the 70's) was born in summet like 1912 and saw many 'keepers from Swift to Trautman to Banks and so on. My Dad always said that his Dad maintained that Frank Swift was by far the greatest goalkeeper he ever saw.

One story my Dad tells me from time to time is that my Grandad was once in the Platt Lane stand and the opposition had a penalty. Swift dived early, the player hit it down the middle, and Swift while horizontal saved it with his feet and volleyed it over the bar. He said his Dad reckoned it was the best save he ever saw!

Big Joe Corrigan. Does anyone remember a save he made against Alan Clarke at Leeds in FA cup in 77. It was out of this world. That year motd had a save of the season and Joe came 2nd to a routine tip over the bar from 25yrds by alex stepney.First time i became aware of a media bias against City. Can anyone get that clip as i'd love to see it again

There is no doubt that we have been blessed with some great keepers over the years. A pity we can't say that for many other positions!

I entirely agree with Gary James' contribution. As a City fan since 1954 the best keeper I have seen by some distance, not only at City but anywhere, was the great Bert. This is contradicted by my Dad who is still going to matches at 89 years of age, and insists, that big Frank shaded it over Bert

It is undoubtedly a generation thing and you can almost guess the ages of the contributors by their individual selections.

A very interesting thread.

Joe Corrigan, for shear guts, well, the fact that he lost his gut. The best, or the bunch, that save against Clarke
