Who will be the starting GK next season?

It has to be Gigi.

The saves he made in our victories against the rags and Littlewoods were as good as I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure any other ‘keeper around today would have made both of those saves.

I don’t disagree that James is a top quality goalie and he still has time on his side to improve, but Donna isn’t exactly ancient. Indeed, at 27, he is still young in goalkeeping terms.

We can’t hide the fact that Donnarumma isn’t as good with his feet as we’d like, but we were spoilt for seven years with Eddie in our team, as no other goalkeeper has ever been as good with the ball at his feet.

I’d stick with Donnarumma, and hope that Trafford will stay as backup, though I very much doubt that will happen.

I would rather see a Trafford loan than a sale, at this point. See what he does for a season, then bring him back if he does well.

Problem with that is he would be in the same position this time next year. His only hope would be if Donnarumma wanted out then James could step straight in.

I think it has to be Trafford. Donnarumma is the better keeper just based on how good his shot stopping is but he doesn't fit the profile of a Maresca GK at all.

Quite interested to see how it all plays out.
Judging by his short history in club management. 'Maresca' would have to change his entire way of playing with 'Donna' in goal. It's a quandary for him to be sure.

I hope that Maresca simply tells them both that the number one position is to be competed for and that there will be no favourites and no cup goalkeeper. It will be based on performances. Outstanding game, you keep your place. Who impresses most in training based on how he wants to play the game is the opening pick. Play well, keep your spot. Don't play well, lose it.
We are talking of two very gifted players here. We are not speaking off a massively increased risk by playing either or the defence falling apart because they cannot trust the man behind them.
This would also be saying to the whole squad that there are young players ready to come in for you who deserve it because of the way they are training and demanding gametime.

Don’t think Donnarumma is as bad with his feet as he’s widely held to be.

I’d say he’s average with his feet. Don’t know if that will be enough for Maresca.

I get the sense he’s a big presence in the dressing room, and widely popular. His presence will be a factor in any evaluation.

Think he’ll probably get the nod, not sure what will happen with Trafford. Hope he stays, but can’t see it personally.

It is absolutely clear that he is well-liked, for sure.

Put it this way I’d be shocked if we benched donarumna . Why don’t we see how he gets on with his second season .

Donnarumma is the better goalkeeper overall and deserves to keep his place. I was a bit disappointed by Trafford’s distribution in the FA Cup final. I expected more from him in that area given how highly some people have been rating him.

Imagine how good Donnarumma would be if he was on Ederson's level with his feet. He'd be a Neuer in his prime level goalkeeper.

He can improve that but with distribution for goalkeepers usually you have it or you don't.

It really depends how (likely Maresca) the new coach wants to play too.

For me I think it's a difficult decision because that shot stopping ability is a huge asset. But he can be weak on crosses or corners at times I have noticed, for such a big guy. The kicking is obviously the main drawback.

Trafford is better with his feet but nowhere near the shot stopper. If only you could combine their strengths. In saying that Ederson made some good saves but never struck me as an amazing shot stopper. In saying that, though, Trafford isn't Ederson's level with his feet - Ederson was freakish level distro for a keeper.

I would stick with Donnarumma myself while acknowledging the drawbacks and caveats with playing from the back. Maybe down the line a different option will make itself known - a goalkeeper who is brilliant in every area. But if it's a choice between Donnarumma and Trafford, I think I'd pick the former.
